Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2025 Race Season |
| October 7, 2006 |
The final event of 2006 took place at Midvale Speedway this past Saturday, October 7. The Compacts were on hand for their first annual Compact Nationals, while Pure Stocks also ran a full program of racing.
In qualifying, Groveport, Ohio driver Ron McMannis set fast time with a 17.91. In all, ten drivers were locked in through time trials, while the rest were split into heats for a chance to make the feature main.
Preliminary racing was exciting as drivers tried to finish in the top two to make the show. Steven Feister, Tom Barrett, Mike Swaney, Eric Feister, and Tammy Rufener won the heats to start in the top five feature spots.
The next ten spots were determined by the finish of the fast dash. Pat Moore won from the pole, while David Breehl, Tad Grove, Jason Morgan, and Eugene Rothacher were top five finishers. The final four starters in the field were determined by the last chance race. They were Cliff Cox, Michael Keefe, Kevin McClintock, and Earl Scranton.
The 50-lap Compact feature rolled onto the speedway and it turned out to be an exciting one. Steven Feister, the pole-sitter, had an amazing run in the early laps as the Midvale, Ohio driver was able to set the pace. Meanwhile, Ron McMannis and Rick James, two first time visitors, were boxed in during the race’s early laps. However, the two fast qualifiers were able to get some clearance in the middle stages of the race to make their moves. McMannis, the winner of the Compact portion of Main Event XIX the previous week, was finally able to catch Feister and make the move near the mid-point. After getting by on the highside, McMannis set sail. Despite the race victory well in the hands of the Columbus, Ohio area driver, racing behind him was extremely exciting. After laps of side-by-side battling for positions three through ten, Adam Mishler finished off one of his best career runs by inching Feister for third at the finish. Following McMannis, Rick James, Mishler and Feister in the top five was Mike Swaney. Tad Grove, David Breehl, Johnny Campbell, Terry McNutt, and Tammy Rufener rounded out the top ten finishers. To go along with his top five feature finish, Feister also took the night’s Compact Non-Winner Race. Britt VanMeter won the Compact B Feature.
In the Papa John’s Pure Stock feature, Dan Hall, a rookie, led the first five laps, but top qualifier Joe Oliver was able to work through the field rather quickly and pace the next 8 laps of the 20-lap event. However, during a lap 13 caution, Oliver went pitside with heating problems. That handed the lead to Dick Aubihl, who was looking for his first feature win of 2006. On the restart, second place competitor Blake Mackey looked to the lowside for the lead. Twice, Aubihl was able to close the door but persistence paid off as Mackey drove by to the inside. After Aubihl and Chuck Elkins got together battling for second, Mackey led the final six circuits to race to victory. Following Mackey in his Trenton Service Tire/Tusco Net #7 were John Leasure, Bob Schneider, Jr., Charlie Childress, and Tim Oliver. The rest of the top ten were Chuck Elkins, Dan Hall, Pat Moore, Brian Gibbs, and Joe Oliver. Elkins won the dash and a heat, while Mackey was victorious in the other heat race event. Bob Scheider, Jr. won the pursuit, while Charlie Childress won the non-winner race.
In Powder Puff Racing, Melissa Jefferies dominated her way to the Pure Stock win. Lois Oliver and Sharon Gibson crossed the line in second and third during a close battle.
The Compact Powder Puff race had Tiffany Calhoun making a last lap pass against Jessica Willison to take the victory. The duo rubbed paint from turn four to the finish line under the checkered flag of Terry Colletti. Tammy Woods finished third, Tana Wills fourth, and Latisha Law fifth.
With that, the 2006 season has officially come to a close at Midvale Speedway. The 2007 division rules will be posted in the coming days on the track website. Thanks to all who made the 2006 season a success.
