Perry and Dobbins Sweep at Midvale
September 4, 2016
Perry and Dobbins Sweep at MidvaleA wonderful crowd and a good field of cars put on an outstanding show on a picturesque Sunday evening at the 3/10 mile oval in Midvale Ohio. The night was capped off by another breathtaking Fireworks display from the Northeast Ohio Pyrotechnic Group as we THANK all of the hard workers all across this great country on this Labor Day weekend. Seventy drivers and their teams made the trek and it was 79 degrees and sunny at race time.

The JD Byrider 100 had the #21 of Jeremy Holbrook and the #99 of John Sandquist Jr on the front row. Sometimes circumstances beyond everyones control can hurt the car count in a traveling series. But the theme for the JD Byrider 100 was quality and not quantity. There was extra prize money on the line with official's changing the distance from 75 to 100 laps and we also added a lap leader bonus, with each driver getting a bonus for each lap led. Holbrook would lead lap 1 with Sandquist still to his outside. With a good run off turn two, Holbrook cleared the #99 and brought Bubba Smith, now a 4-time track Champion at Midvale, along with him in the #12. On lap 4, Billy Roberts in the #88 was up to third but the machine on the move was up to fourth. Alex Rosenberry in the #2 was starting to carve his way to the front. Slicing and dicing his way around Roberts and Smith, Rosenberry was in 2nd a lap later. On lap 8, Rosenberry swung to the outside of Holbrook for the race lead. Rosenberry's #2 was on a rail, he could put it wherever he wanted to. He was able to complete the pass on lap 9 and would start to put some distance on the field. The next 16 circuits had Rosenberry pulling away but leaving some feverish racing behind him. Rosenberry was clicking off qualifying laps in the 13.6's in clean air. Emerson Huffman in the #90 was starting to climb up towards the front as he seemed to have a good car underneath him. The first caution waved on lap 25 as the early race leader Holbrook had a mechanical issue on the front straightaway running 2nd. As he slowed in the outside lane, everyone took evasive action to avoid the rapidly slowing #21 and Huffman ended up being the one to collect Holbrook. Huffman had another good car but just terrible luck as he was forced to pit for front end damage twice under caution and finally had to retire along with Holbrook. The restart had familiar foes on the front row. Rosenberry and Smith started side by side with the #7 of Justin Claucherty and 2-time Series Champion Bud Perry in the #10 in row two. Perry who was the winner back in July and is the current points leader, had to go to a backup car due to some engine issues before qualifying. Perry had about 5 shakedown laps and incredibly turned the fastest laps of the night in qualifying. On the restart, Rosenberry was able to keep the lead and began to walk away once again. But Perry used the high lane and moved up to 2nd on lap 31. On lap 33, Claucherty moved around Bubba for 3rd as the handling on the #12 started to really go away. Perry would start to reel in Rosenberry little by little and by the halfway mark, he was there. Claucherty was over a half straightaway behind and was saving his stuff, waiting on a caution. As the laps wound down, Claucherty had to go as the caution never came. As the front two patiently waited to get down to the final few laps, the #7 was digging. Claucherty was a tenth faster that the lead duo and by lap 78, it became a trio for the race lead. I think Perry was a little suprised to see the yellow and black KT Trucking machine from Clark Lake, MI. So Perry pushed the "go button" and started to apply pressure to Alex. Looking high and low for a way around, Perry settled on the 2nd groove. After a few good runs, he did a 4-wheel drift into turn one on lap 86. The fans all rose to their feet in anticipation of the #10 slapping the concrete, but he saved it!!! To the delight of the crowd, Perry continued on, but there was a new car in 2nd place. Claucherty snuck by on the inside and had his foot planted firmly on "the loud pedal". Applying pressure to Alex lap after lap, corner after corner. After a few inside looks that Rosenberry closed the door on, Perry started to move back in on the top 2. On lap 96, Claucherty had a good run off turn four. He dipped his nose to the inside of the Flite Test, Rosenberry Towing sponsored #2 going into turn one just as Perry was looking to the outside of the #7. The top two made slight contact, spinning Rosenberry around and bringing out caution number two. After looking at multiple angles of the replay, official's determined that Claucherty wasn't up far enough and was sent to the tail. The good thing was, the tail was 4th as Smith and Sandquist we a lap down. That moved Nick Grodi in the #40 up to the 3rd position. Grodi, who finished 2nd in July, had his issues in practice as well, changing a rear end and transmission. A huge shout-out to the Harold Fair Jr team as they helped the Grodi bunch make that change after Fair was eliminated in practice after a stuck throttle sent him into the turn three wall. On the restart, Rosenberry again jumped slightly ahead, but slipped off turn two. As they headed down the back straightaway, Rosenberry struggled to catch his #2 as Perry went by on the outside. As the two got to turn 3, Rosenberry collected Perry and spun him, sending him back to 4th and moving Perry to the lead with Grodi in 2nd. On the next restart, Perry shot out to the lead as Grodi and Claucherty battled for 2nd, Rosenberry pulled off, ending his bid at a repeat with a broken master cylinder. Grodi and Claucherty would get together and bring out the final caution on lap 97 in turn three. Perry shot out of a cannon on the last restart and would sail into Downtown Ford Victory Lane for the second time in a row and 3rd time at Midvale. Following the Edgerton OH driver in the Boerger Electric, Keyhole Pizza, Seger Trucking, Logan Service, Meyer's Garage and Drive Thru sponsored #10 was Grodi, Claucherty, Smith and Sandquist Jr in a very enjoyable and action packed event. Rosenberry took home the most bonus money, leading 87 laps, Holbrook 9 laps and Perry the final 4.

The first feature to hit the Speedway was the JD Byrider Street Stock's for their 20 lapper. This Division has a points battle that only has two weeks left. Gabe Pringle can all but lock it up with a good finish and Colton Ritchey needs to finish in front of Pringle if he hopes to go back to back. Mike Martin in the #11 and Bear Schwartz in the #77 brought the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Schwartz would lead lap 1 on the outside lane and Martin would take over the lead for lap 2. The duo would stay side by side for a few laps until Schwartz got out of shape off turn four and started to drop back. Kyle Grove in the #3 was on the move in the outside lane as he battled with Bill Aubihl in the #31 for second. As Aubihl and Grove stayed side by side, Martin would play both sides of the street out front. Meaning, he would slide up off the corners to stall out the high lane and dive back to the bottom going into the turns to stall out the bottom lane. It was working to perfection until the caution waved on lap 9 for the #44 of Larry Smith and the #77 of Josh Moss getting together in turn two. Smith would be forced to pull off with damage. After another quick caution on the initial restart, Grove was able to rocket out front with Martin sliding down in front of Aubihl for 2nd. Gabe Pringle in the #7 started his march towards the front in the outside lane. As the laps wound down, Grove was able to pull away and Aubihl and Martin didn't make it easy on the point leader. Pringle finally cleared Martin on lap 17, but it was too late. It looked as though Grove would win his 8th Feature of the season. But, that's why you have to pass post race tech before it becomes official. Even though he crossed the finish line first, Grove was disqualified in post race inspection, giving Pringle his first win of the season and all but wrapped up his first career championship. Since a young age after his father passed away, Pringle has sought that Championship that his father won twice in the same division with the same # on the door and the same paint scheme. As long as he qualifies next week, that dream will become reality. Following the Midvale OH driver in the Creative Floats, Lisa Hoy at State Farm Insurance, Reidl Construction, Tim Bickford at Parkway, Dave's Towing and Keith's Cars sponsored #7 was Martin, Aubihl, fastest qualifier Don Boron Sr and Waylon Orr.

The Open Modified 40 Lap feature was the final feature of the evening and had an extra $100 prize money for the leader at the halfway mark in memory of Becky Swinehart, a former scorer at Midvale, who passed away last week. There was also a bonus to the top 3 Crate Engine finishers. Dave Dobbins in the #53 and Nathan Embree in the #10 started up front. Dobbins raced out front and was looking for his second straight Open Modified 40 win at Midvale. After a couple early cautions, the front remained pretty much the same except for the #0 of fastest qualifier and former track record holder Kenny Phillips. Phillips was making the outside lane work and he was up to the 3rd position. As he worked to the outside of Embree for second, the #0 twitched off turn four and began to slow up. A lap later Phillips had to pull to the infield with a flat left rear tire. Dobbins continued to lead Embree as "Hollywood" Scott Archer in the #28 started to apply pressure to the #10 for second. Archer, finished 3rd back in July and has many laps around Midvale in multiple divisions. On lap 12, the #15 of Craig Phillips and the #0 of Lucas Ripley moved up to 6th and 7th respectively, just before caution #3 flew on lap 12 for a spin in turn four. On the restart, "The Rooster" Brandon Bailey in the #55 moved up to 4th and the #5 of "Stormin" Norm Taylor to 5th behind Dobbins and Archer, who was able to get around Embree. Dobbins would pick up the halfway money as he held a 5 or 6 car length advantage. The 5th and final caution came out on lap 26 for the #33 of Bill Shimko in turn two. The final restart was critical and it was the first one with Archer along side Dobbins. The two were dead even coming off turn four but Dobbins was just better on the restarts. The #53 was able to stretch out a 6-8 car length lead once again as Mike Lawson in the other #53 was able to take over the 4th position. Lawson, who started 11th was having a great night with limited laps around the 3/10 mile oval. As the laps clicked away, Archer started to reel in Dobbins. Archer seemed to have a better car on the long runs, but needed a few more laps to make things interesting. Dobbins, a former Modified Track Champion at Midvale, would lead wire to wire for his second straight victory. Following the Hartville OH driver in the Ganley Ford, Line-X of Canton, R&R Engines, Pyramid Pipeline sponsored #53 was Archer, Embree, Lawson and Ripley. The highest finishing Crates were Bubba Smith in 10th, Lee McCreery in 12th and Shimko in 15th.

The third feature was for the 20 lap Canton Auto Salvage Compact's. This was another Division that had a point battle tonight. Britt Vanmeter was the points leader over Gage Jaberg, a much tighter battle than in the Street Stock's. Kyle Finlayson in a different #15 than he has been in all year and Clayton Oliver in the #19 brought the field to the stripe. Oliver would lead lap 1 as Tim Frederick in the #18 and Mike McDonald in the #16 battled for 2nd. On lap 5, McDonald took over 2nd and began to set his sights on Oliver, who had built up a nice lead. Blaine Salsberry in the #4 was also on the move, taking over 4th on lap 5, 3rd on lap 6 and 2nd on lap 7. On lap 8, Salsberry and Oliver would make some contact in turn two, but both would keep going. When those two made contact, it stacked up the field and the #38 of Brandon France got into the #77 of Zach Cogar, sending him spinning and bringing out the only caution of the event. On the restart, Salsberry took the lead off turn two as fastest qualifier Kyle Rector in the #22 moved to 2nd. Salsberry tried to play defense as long as he could, but Rector was just too fast on this night. Rector took over the lead and cruised away. Gage Jaberg in the #21 was able to climb up to second as Britt Vanmeter in the #27 got stuck back in traffic. That will make the season finale very interesting!! Following the Dover OH driver in the #22 was Jaberg, Salsberry, Oliver and McDonald.
