Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| August 27, 2016 |
With only three point nights remaining, week #16 was very important and some driver's were able to take advantage of their opportunity. Guess Motor's presented Twin 50 lap features for the Late Model's and Modified's including Race Car Rides at intermission. Seventy car and truck combinations were pit side and skies were overcast and 86 degrees at race time.
The first "Twin 50" pulled onto the 3/10 mile oval and it was for the Summit Racing Economy Modified's. The #22 of Jimmy McCune started on the pole with the #02 of Mike Bowers along side. Bowers would lead lap 1 and 3 by a nose, McCune would take lap 2 and 4. The machines on the move were the #2 of Lee McCreery and the #38 of Kevin McClintock. They started in the second and third rows respectively, but showed early that they would be the two to beat. On lap 5, McCreery jumped into the lead as Dan Harding in the #65 followed. Harding looked much stronger than he did earlier in the night and that cost him. On lap 9, the first caution waved as Harding ran 2 laps under his qualifying time and was sent to the tail. That put McClintock on the outside of McCreery for the restart. McCreery would race out front with McClintock patiently tucked in behind. The front two would start to distance themselves from Shawn Kaufman in the #10 and Bryce Allensworth in the #21, as they battled for third. The second caution flew on lap 16 as the #27 Braden Swaney got into Allensworth and spun him in turn two. After the restart, McCreery would lead as McClintock started to apply the pressure. Lap after lap the #38 would get a good run off turn two but each time McCreery had just enough to slam the door shut going into turn three. As those 2 battled for the lead, Lucas Ripley was able to get around Kaufman and was beginning to run down the lead duo. By lap 30 we had a 3 way dogfight for the lead. The third and final caution flew on lap 34 as Bill Shimko in the #33 spun off turn four. The last sixteen laps were some of the hardest, closest and nail-biting laps we have seen all year. McCreery was just good enough to stay out front of the faster McClintock. McCreery, admittedly placed his car in spots to keep the #38 at bay. Fastest qualifier Brandon Bailey in the #55 and Allensworth were in the mix as well, but they just weren't quite as good as the top 3. As the laps wound down, the anticipation of something happening increased with every corner. Finally coming to the white flag, McCreery appeared to check up ever so slightly in the middle of turns three and four, McClintock made some contact with the rear bumper of the #2, sending him sliding off turn four. It would have been amazing if McCreery would had been able to hang on to his machine, let alone keep the lead. Somehow, he was able to do both. McClintock had no choice but to check up, costing him second as Ripley shot to the outside of them both. Coming off turn two, Ripley was along side McCreery and appeared to have the momentum, but some lapped traffic stalled him out and that sent McCreery into victory lane for the 3rd time in 2016. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the M&D Design's, Riddle Trucking, Gribble Fabrication, R&R Carb Service, Massillon Machine and Sick Puppy Tattoo sponsored #2 was Ripley, McClintock, Allensworth and Bailey.
The Canton Auto Salvage Compact's took to the Speedway for their 20 lapper with Jeffrey Orr in the #69 and Travis Riddle in the #7 on the front row. Orr, filling in for Dan Buckey, would take over the early lead. Clayton Oliver in the #19 absolutely grenaded his motor about the middle of the back straightaway and all through turns three and four on lap 2. After a lengthy cleanup, Orr would race hard with Brandon France in the #38 for five laps or so, until the point leader arrived. Britt Vanmeter in the #27 made quick work of the front two and set sail. The #21 of Gage Jaberg did exactly what he had to do in qualifying and in the heat race as he cut into Vanmeter's slim point lead. But in the feature he got held up behind France, Brent Shreffler in the #24 and Blaine Salsberry in the #4 as they battled for runner-up spot with Orr. Once things sorted themselves out, Jaberg was able to get into second, but there was only five laps remaining and Vanmeter had almost a full straightaway lead. Vanmeter needed every inch of that lead he built up. Jaberg was clicking off some impressive lap times and got to the rear deck lid of the #27 but not until the final corner. Vanmeter would pull into victory lane for the fourth time this season. Following the Cuyahoga Falls OH driver in the Outlaw Vinyl's and Cater For You sponsored #27 was Jaberg, Salsberry, Shreffler and France.
The second "Twin 50", this time for the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's was next up. The #02 of Jesse Page and Bob Schneider Jr in the #17 brought the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Schneider would lead lap 1 via the outside lane as Page battled hard on the bottom. Coming off turn four to complete lap 2, Schneider appeared to get loose coming off the corner. When he tried to catch it, he over corrected and shot straight towards the front straightaway wall, in front of the whole field. A few machines did a great job to miss him and a couple just couldn't get slowed up. The two machines that plowed in were the #6 of Larry Baker, who has had terrible luck for the last year and a half, and Mike Smith in the #26. Both Baker and Smith had quite a bit of damage, but Schneider's machine was destroyed. All three drivers were disappointed, but most importantly, ok. After another lengthy cleanup by the incredible Midvale Speedway track crew, last week's feature winner Tom Stankiewicz in the #42 would restart to the outside of Page. Stankiewicz would shoot out front and Alex Rosenberry would follow a lap later in the #2 up to second. Bryant Smith in the #1 would work his way around Page for third on lap 5. It took Rosenberry only a couple laps to run down Stankiewicz and begin applying the heat. Rosenberry searched and searched for a way around. He would get a run on the outside and get all the way beside the #42, but the outside lane was badly effected by the accident and blown engine in the Compact feature. It just wasn't there. Rosenberry continued to work, not satisfied with following the leader. He tried multiple times to the outside and even a few crossover attempts, all failed. Stankiewicz was driving the perfect line and knew if he protected the bottom, he had things in control. Bryant would grind out some quick laps to pull right up on the fuel cell of the #2, bringing brother Bubba, the point leader and fastest qualifier with him. At the halfway mark, newcomer to Midvale Doug Mate in the #14 ran down the front four. Mate, driving in memory of his owner and friend that passed away a few weeks ago, was having a great run. On lap 26 Bubba was able to get around Bryant as the #1 tested the outside of Rosenberry. A couple laps later, the game changer happened. Exiting turn two, the Flight Test, Rosenberry Towing #2 lost power. Bubba got into the back of Alex, spinning him to the infield, Rosenberry was done for the evening in a suprise twist. Nursing a left front tire rub and some cosmetic damage, "The Master of Restarts" rocketed out to the lead on the lap 28 restart. It looked as though Stankiewicz was starting to lose the handle on his machine just prior to the caution as his rear end kept stepping out. That condition continued over the last 20 circuits as he could only get within 6 or 8 car lengths of the leader. All in all, a first and second in back to back weeks is pretty good for the Strongsville OH driver. Bubba would pad his point lead and snag his seventh trophy of the season in another masterful run. Following the North Canton OH driver in the Finish Line Motor's, Finish Line Design's, Smith's Auto Sales and Freedom Auto Finance sponsored #12 was Stankiewicz, Bryant, Mate and Page.
Bill Aubihl in the #31 and Bob Passwaters Sr in the #75 brought the field down for the JD Byrider Street Stock 20 lap feature. The first time into turn one, Aubihl locked up the left front tire and did the same thing going into turn three. Possible having a break issue, Aubihl was still able to lead lap one. As he again locked up the left front on lap 2, Larry Smith in the #44 got to the inside. Smith would lead with Aubihl dropping in behind. It seemed as if the brake issue went away or Aubihl just did a good job compensating as he stayed glued to Smith. As the front two ran nose to tail, there was a rare species of Elk running rampid through the field. It was the fast, ultra aggressive, coming to the front come hell or high water Deep Blue #88 Elk. Rick Elkins Jr, driving the Don Boron Sr #88 was marching thru the field. Using the outside, the inside, 3-wide, over and under, everything in the bag of tricks. He started 8th and by lap 11 he was slinging it to the outside of Aubihl for 3rd. A lap later he was to the outside of Smith. The two rubbed horns a few times, poked their chests out and grunted, but that rare breed of Deep Blue Elk prevailed. Boron Sr found himself in victory lane as a car owner for the first time in awhile and Elkins found himself in victory lane for the first time in awhile as a driver. It was a match made in heaven.....and hopefully for everyone else.....it was a one time deal. Following the Canton OH driver in the Bowling's Used Cars, Hidden Hybrid Holsters sponsored #88 was Smith, Aubihl, Tom Earley and point leader Gabe Pringle.
The final feature was the Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck 12 lapper. Rich Schweitzer in the #84 and Joe Linard in the #82 brought the field to the line. The duo would stay side by side for the first lap and a half with Schweitzer inching ahead. "Mr Smooth" was able to clear Linard on lap 2 with the #28 of fastest qualifier "Jolly" Roger Linard right behind the front two. Lap after lap, Schweitzer would push up at the exit of the corner, allowing Joe to get a nose along side. But time and time again, Schweitzer had enough horsepower to keep the #84 out front. On lap 10, the point leader, the #118 of Colt Locker was able to get around Roger for the 3rd position but the leading duo had built up enough of an advantage that he wasn't able to become a factor. At the end, Schweitzer was able to hold on for his 3rd victory of the season in another race that ran green to checkered. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the VanMeter's Auto, Allen's Muffler, Federated Auto Parts and Alicia Manly MD sponsored #84 was Joe, Locker, Roger and Cory Williams who was subbing for Cody Jaberg in the #22.
Sunday night September 4th will be the JD Byrider 75 for The Main Event Racing Series. Open Modified's will run 40 laps and Street Stock's and Compact's will also be in action.
