Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| July 9, 2016 |
Fans were treated to another huge night of giveaways and excitement during VanMeter's Auto Repair / Federated Auto Parts Christmas In July Night at Thunder In The Valley. Our wonderful partners, sponsors, drivers, teams and fan's donated over 20 bicycles to smiling kids, adults and families were also rewarded with some great prizes. All in all, it was another highly successful night and the action on the 3/10 mile oval was action packed as always. Sixty one car and truck combinations made the trip under partly cloudy skies and 81 degrees at race time.
First to hit the track was the 25 lap Summit Racing Economy Modified feature with the #54 of Big Mac Doug McMillen and Lucas Ripley in the #0 starting on the front row. Ripley led the opening circuit by about a half of a car length as the front three rows battled side by side. Going into turn three on lap 2, McMillen was able to take the top spot as Ripley fell into the clutches of Bryce Allensworth in the #21. After a lap and a half of good hard racing, Allensworth took the position. As the race quickly entered the middle stages, the field all seemed content to be patient and run nose to tail. Kevin McClintock in the #38 decided he would be the first to dance, as he moved to the outside of Jason Grewell, who was in his new #99 machine in the 5th position. McClintock was unable to make the pass and slipped back as the #2 of Lee McCreery and Grewell battled for position with Ripley just in front. As they moved through turn 2, Grewell made contact with Ripley, bringing out the first caution on lap 17. On the restart, McMillen and Allensworth traded some paint battling hard for the top spot as the caution waved for the 2nd time on lap 18. On that restart, Allensworth would get a good jump off of turn 4 and would take over the race lead as McCreery took over second in the outside lane. After a couple of quick cautions on laps 19 and 21, the final restart was set, Allensworth on the inside and McCreery on the outside. Coming off turn 2 side by side, the duo made contact and both lost momentum, but only one would lose position. Allensworth was able to hold on to the lead and McClintock rocketed up into the runner up spot. As the laps wound down, McClintock was all over the #21, but was unable to get by. Following the Tusky OH driver in the Star Strategies Safe Money Management sponsored #21 was McClintock, McCreery, Ripley and McMillen.
Next to hit the track was the 20 lap JD Byrider Street Stock feature with Tom Earley in the #31 and Bob Passwaters Jr in the #74 bringing the field to the line. Earley had some sort of mechanical issue on the initial start, causing him to head pit side. So, with the shuffling of the field, that put last week's feature winner Larry Smith in the #44 along side Passwaters Jr. Smith was able to jump out to the race lead and started to inch away lap after lap. On lap 5, Bob Passwaters Sr was able to take over the 2nd position from his son and Kyle Grove in the #3 followed Sr through. By the halfway point, Passwaters and Grove caught Smith and started to apply some pressure. Grove was able to first, make a nice inside pass of Passwaters Sr and then was able to get to the inside of Smith. The #44 and #3 would make some door to door contact going into turn 3, but Grove would take over the point. The races only caution flew on lap 16 for the #77 of Josh Moss, it appeared as if his motor or transmission expired on the front straightaway and he put down some debris and fluid. On the restart, Grove would drive away as Smith put up a fight for a lap or so, but the #3 was on a mission. The good news for Grove was, he crossed the finish line first. The bad news, he was unable to make it through post race tech and was disqualified, handing the win to Smith. Following the Canton OH driver in the Stewart's Flooring, ZiffyCat.com, Joe's Auto Service, CJ's Bar and Grill and Appliance and More sponsored #44 was Passwaters Sr, Gabe Pringle, TJ Barker and Phillip Cox.
The Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck's headed out for their 15 lapper with Derek Cordia in the #72 and Rich Schweitzer in the #84 bringing the field down for the start. Schweitzer quickly went to the front as Cordia pushed Joe Linard in the #82 to the grass, allowing Jolly Roger Linard in the #28 to get around them both on the high side in his first feature start of the season. If the fans would have closed their eyes and listened to the Track Announcer say Rich Schweitzer leads with Jolly Roger right behind in 2nd, they would have thought they teleported back to the late 80's and early 90's. But it was good that they didn't close their eyes, because they would have missed a great race. As they crossed the halfway point, Schweitzer started to develop a handling issue and going into turn three on lap 8, he had to get hard on the binders. That allowed the father / son duo to split Schweitzer off turn 4, only this time it was Smokin Joe that benefited. Joe would race out front by a couple truck lengths over Roger. The #118 of Colt Locker, who broke his own track record in qualifying, worked his way up to 3rd in the final stages but had a mechanical issues on the final lap. Two years ago to the day, Joe won his first career late model feature in a gray #82. After the victory lane celebration, jubilation quickly turned into disbelief and heartache as he learned of his Mother's sudden passing. On this night, he would stand in victory lane in remembrance of his Mom driving a gray #82 with his Dad following just behind for a 1-2 Linard family finish. Rounding out the top 5 behind the Dover OH driver in the CinnaVapes Premium E-Liquid, Dover Drywall, Russ Moore & Son's Concrete, Racer 8 Performance, Rick Watson Trucking, Buckey Auto Sales, South Philly Pizza and Ennis Hauling sponsored #82 was Roger Linard, Schweitzer, Locker and Cordia.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's were up next with their 30 lapper. The #02 of Jesse Page and the #17 of Bob Schneider Jr brought the field down for Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Schneider blasted out to the lead with Page in second and Gary Hoopingarner in the #45 in 3rd. Schneider built up a half of a straightaway lead before Alex Rosenberry in the #2 was able to take over the second spot on lap 3. By lap 6, Rosenberry had caught Schneider and fastest qualifier Tom Stankiewicz in the #42 was up to the 3rd spot, but was a full straightaway behind the lead duo. Patiently waiting on his opportunity, Rosenberry finally executed an inside pass for the lead on lap 11. Stankiewicz was able to run down the leaders and would take over the second position on lap 19, about 5-6 car lengths behind the #2. Bubba Smith in the #12 moved to 4th but was almost a half lap behind Rosenberry. As the final 10 laps clicked away, Rosenberry was able to maintain a 6-8 car length gap over Stankiewicz, who was never able to get any closer. Bubba would move to 3rd on lap 22 but needed a caution that never came. After an early wreck fest that shortened the field a week ago in the Main Event race, the Late Model's would finish up an entertaining, clean, flag to flag 30 lap feature with Rosenberry taking home his first win after a rough start to 2016. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Flight Test, Rosenberry Towing, McIntosh Oil Company sponsored #2 was Stankiewicz, Bubba Smith, Schneider Jr and Bryant Smith.
The final race of the evening was the 20 lap Canton Auto Salvage Compact feature. The
