Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| September 6, 2015 |
A near capacity crowd was on hand to witness a spectacular event in the middle of Labor Day weekend. The Main Event Racing Series was on hand for The JD Byrider 75, there was an Open Modified 40 Lap feature, Street Stock's and Compact's ran their regular program and a huge Summer ending Fireworks display. The seventeenth event of the season had seventeen Main Event Racing Series machines, thirty big motor and crate engine Modified's and thirty four Street Stock's and Compact's under mostly sunny skies and 85 degrees.
Matthew Mills in the #4 was the fastest qualifier and rolled an eight, putting the #87 of Mike Mazzagetti and the #88 of Billy Roberts on the front row for The Main Event Racing Series JD Byrider 75. As Chief Starter Chuck Barrett's green flag waved, Mazzagetti raced out to the early advantage and pulled the #65 of Tim Ice and the #18 of Jeff Ganus with him. Mazzagetti and Ganus are the top two in series points, with Ganus leading by 43. They are also the only two drivers to visit victory lane in 2015. Mazzagetti dominated the Downtown Ford 100 back in July but was struggling a little bit with the handling of the #87. After a couple quick cautions on lap 3 and lap 6, Ganus was able to take the top spot on the restart and the #2 of Alex Rosenberry was able to pick his way from the 7th starting position to second. Rosenberry started to take a few looks to the inside off of the corners and was finally able to make the pass on lap 11 for the lead. The following lap, the defending Champion of The JD Byrider 75, Bud Perry in the #10, was able to get around Mazzagetti and take over third. A couple more quick cautions on lap 22 and lap 26, Both seeing Ganus give Rosenberry a lap to a lap and a half battle on the outside, with Rosenberry eventually prevailing both times. The biggest mishap took place on lap 27 as Ice and Roberts got together on the front straightaway while battling for sixth, ending both of their nights and causing a lengthy cleanup. After the restart Ganus got the best run he had all night and almost cleared Rosenberry on the outside into turn three, contact was made with both leaders spinning in a cloud of smoke. Both drivers were sent to the tail for the restart, landing Perry in a great position to defend his JD Byrider 75 title. After the restart, Perry would check out and Ganus and Rosenberry started their march back to the front. On lap 40, Rosenberry would make a key move in traffic, getting around Ganus for the fourth position. On lap 46, the next to the last caution waved in turn two for an accident involving the #23 of Ron Kirkpatrick and the #90 of Emerson Huffman, who were both having great runs inside the top 6. For the restart, Perry and Mazzagetti were on row one and Rosenberry and Ganus in row two. Remember that key pass Rosenberry made in traffic, that landed him on the inside behind Perry. The #10 shot out to the lead and Rosenberry followed. After a couple laps of setting up the pass, Rosenberry completed his charge back to the front with an inside move on lap 50. Rosenberry would maintain about a 4-5 car length advantage over Perry, with Ganus fading. The final caution would wave on lap 73 for Ganus who spun in turn two on his own. That set up a green - white - checkered finish, giving Perry one last shot. On the restart, Rosenberry roared to the lead and set sail, picking up his second career Main Event Racing Series victory at his home track. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Flight Test, Rosenberry Towing sponsored #2 was Perry, Mazzagetti, Nick Grodi and RJ White.
The Open Modified 40 had the top sixteen locked in from qualifying and the top eight advancing from the last chance race. The top sixteen starting spots were determined by the finishing position in the heat races, landing the topless crate engine #21 of Bryce Allensworth and the big motor #38 of Kevin McClintock on the front row. After a few failed attempts at a start, McClintock would lead lap one with Allensworth still along side. As the duo raced off turn two on lap two, Allensworth would take the lead away and the #48 of Matt Wilson would move up to the second. The first caution waved on lap 10 as the last chance race winner, the #75 of Stephen Klinect spun in turn two. On the restart, Wilson was able to use the horsepower of his big motor and take the lead, dropping Allensworth to second and Jeff Amsdell in the #18 moving up to third. On lap 15, the #9 of Dave Dobbins and McClintock made contact in turn two bringing out the caution. McClintock admitted fault and gave Dobbins the sixth position back while McClintock pulled pit side. On the restart, Allensworth hung tough for a lap on the outside, but the big motors prevailed and he started to fade back. Amsdell would take the lead with a good restart on lap 19, dropping Wilson to second. After a debris caution on lap 22, Amsdell would again get a good start as Wilson got shuffled out in the high lane. Kenny Phillips in the #0, Dobbins and fastest qualifier Scott Archer in the #28 would occupy the top 4 behind Amsdell. After a few more quick cautions, the field shuffled a little bit as Phillips dropped back, Dobbins moved to second, Archer to third and Wilson back to fourth. The final restart took place on lap 36, Dobbins gave it all he had in the outside lane, but Amsdell was just too strong. The Rocky View OH driver would pick up his first Midvale Speedway win in the Direct Detail, JRI Shocks sponsored #18. Rounding out the top 5 was Dobbins, Archer, Phillips and Wilson. Allensworth would take home the extra cash for the highest finishing crate engine in 7th with Braden Swaney in the #27 next in show in 9th.
Even thought the focus wasnt on The JD Byrider Street Stock's tonight, they have a great points battle going on. Josh Moss in the #77 and TJ Barker in the #11 brought the field to the stripe. Barker got a great run off turn two to take the lead with Larry Smith in the #44 close behind. After a lap 2 caution, Barker again raced out front until he lost the rear end of his machine off turn four and spun on his own. That put the #80 of Robbie Patterson on the point as he edged Smith at the line the previous lap with Kyle Grove running 3rd. On lap 5, Patterson spun his machine while leading, handing the lead over to Grove. Kyle started the night 22 points behind fellow rookie Colton Ritchey in the #21 with 2 weeks left. Ritchey would have transmission issues and would finish 7th, 12 laps down. A couple late caution would not deter Grove as he has his sights set on the title! It will come down to who finishes ahead of who next week. Following the Uhrichsville OH driver to his 8th win on the season was Bob Passwaters Sr, Waylon Orr, Cyler Bertram and Bob Passwaters Jr.
The Canton Auto Salvage Compact's ran 2 - 15 lap features with the first going green to checkered. Leeza Moore in the #95 and Alan Clark in the #169 brought the field to green. Moore raced out front and the # 50 of Larry Ennis Jr was working the 3rd groove from the back. Ennis was making ground in the points leading car but something happened and he either got loose and faded back and decided to take it easy or something was a miss, either way he ended up being a non factor. The guy that was a factor was Gage Jaberg in the #21. Jaberg charged from the 7th starting spot and started to battle Moore and Justin Renicker in the #175 for the lead. Those three would put on a heck of a battle over the final 14 laps. Jaberg was finally able to power by Moore on the outside with 2 to go. Following the current runner up in points from New Philadelphia OH in The Michael Taylor Allstate Insurance, C&K Auto Service, Rt. 39 Auto Salvage, Fox Auto Salvage and Parts Sponsored #21 was Moore, Renicker, Cristian Bailey and Clark.
The second 15 lap Compact Feature seen Jim Keller Jr come from the back to the front twice to pick up his second win on the year. Following The Minerva OH driver in the Minerva Kick It For Childhood Cancer, Stark County Walk For Autism Speaks sponsored #28 was Brad McClain, Korey Herron, Brandon France and Mike Shear.
