Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| August 22, 2015 |
On Saturday night August 22nd, McIntosh Oil Company presented the 29th Annual McDonald's Cruise-in at intermission along with the Midvale Karting Series. The Rolling Thunder Ohio Chapter 2 were on hand to do a 50/50 fundraiser that benefits the Veterans in our area. They also presented Midvale Speedway with a POW*MIA Flag in a brief ceremony at the start-finish line. Please go visit www.rollingthunderohio2.org for more information on the great things they do. Sixty seven cars and trucks made the tow along with fourteen Karts under mostly sunny skies and 84 degrees.
First up was the 12 lap feature for the Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck Division with Cody Jaberg in the #22 and Michael Varnes in the #95 bringing the field to green. Jaberg, who has really been starting to show improvement as a driver since he has been able to shake the bad luck bug that kept biting him through most of the season, took the early jump. Jaberg kept his truck at the front for half of the heat race, but his stint would be a little shorter this time as Joe Linard in the #82 was able to work by on the high side on lap two. Linard's lead would be short lived as well, Colt Locker in the powerful #118 tore around the outside and sailed off. Jaberg would hold onto the 3rd spot until Keith Anderson and Derek Cordia worked their way around in the later stages of the event. Locker would Saturday night Cruise-in to victory lane (like that?) for his 3rd feature victory of the season as the feature went green to checkered. Following the Somerdale OH driver in the Townhouse Drive-thru, Locker Racing sponsored #118 was Linard, Anderson, Cordia and Jaberg.
Next up was Todd Ripley in the #22 and Johnny Hughes in the #03 leading the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Ripley would get a nice start and pull out to the race lead as Hughes slid back in the high lane. Matthew Mills in the #4 followed Ripley and the #32 of Glenn Gault Jr tagged along. With drivers being able to choose their lane on restarts this week, it jumbled up the field a bit after the first caution on lap two. Ripley and Mills would be on the front row with Gault choosing high, putting Hughes on the bottom in row 2. At the drop of the green, something happened to Ripley and he was forced to pull to the infield in disappointment. Mills raced out front but had his hands full with a loose race car and his mirror full of Gault. On lap six, Tom Stankiewicz broke something in the rear end of his #42 while running 3rd. Alex Rosenberry in the #2, who was looking for back to back feature wins, would restart 3rd. Mills and Gault would wage a nice battle for a handful of laps, Mills continued to fight a super loose car, but was able to have just enough to keep Gault beside him in the high lane. Finally off turn 2 on lap 12, Gault slipped and had to check up, allowing Rosenberry the room he needed. Mills would fight hard, but Rosenberry had a much better handling machine. He would make the outside pass and pull away for his second consecutive feature victory. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Flight Test, Rosenberry Towing sponsored #2 was Mills, Bubba Smith, Gault Jr, and Ryan Tedesco. After the race, Mills was disqualified for passing Tech, moving everyone up and Jonathan Reitter into the top 5.
The third feature of the night was the Canton Auto Salvage Compact's for their 20 lap contest. Jake "Turtle" Albright driving Dan Buckey's #69 and Britt Vanmeter in the #27 brought the field to the stripe. Vanmeter would lead lap one via the outside lane until Turtle battled back and took the top spot. Larry Ennis Jr was subbing for brother Wes in the #50 and was on the move from the 7th starting spot up to second. After a debris caution on lap four that put Ennis Jr in the outside lane, he would take advantage and pick up the race lead. Blaine Salsberry in the #4 would find his way up to 3rd by the time caution #2 waved. Albright would choose the bottom lane, allowing Salsberry to restart on the outside of Ennis Jr. Those two would put on a whale of a show over the final thirteen laps. Ennis Jr would not give up the bottom and Salsberry did all he could on the top side. Ennis Jr did a masterful job at placing his machine in tough spots for Salsberry, not allowing him to gain any momentum. Lap after lap Blaine tried and lap after lap Larry would keep the #50 right where it needed to be. The New Philadelphia OH driver would go on to claim his first career feature victory and help his brother and Joe Oliver pad their points lead. Following the Stewart's Flooring, Oliver's Garage, Bad Boy Sandblaster's Sponsored #50 was Salsberry, Kyle Finlayson, Allen Clark and Albright.
Phillip Cox in the #09 and the #0 of Lucas Ripley would start on the front row of the Summit Racing Economy Modified Feature. Ripley would get a great start and dive into the bottom lane with the lead off turn two as Cox slipped, stacking up the field and falling to 5th. Bryce Allensworth in the #21 and Mike Green in the #36 took advantage of Cox's slip up, moving to second and third respectively. On lap five, Allensworth decided it was time to go, making a bold move on the bottom into turn 3. Ripley gave him a tiny bit of room and as they worked through the middle of the corner, Allensworth nudged the #0 up the hill, allowing him to take over the top spot. After a couple cautions, everyone held status quo on the restarts, even with being able to choose lanes. Allensworth had the best car with the cooler conditions and flat drove away. Following the Tusky OH driver to his second career victory in the Star Strategies Safe Money Management sponsored #21 was Ripley, Lee McCreery, Green and Cox.
The final feature of the evening was the JD Byrider Street Stock's for their 20 lapper. The best point battle currently is in this division and after this night, it would get even closer. TJ Barker in the #11 and Bob Passwaters Jr would lead the field to the green. Barker would take the lead off turn two, but opened the bottom up for the #44 being driven by former Champion Teddy Oliver. Oliver would lead and pull away until he was busted for breaking out of his qualifying time on lap five. So with Oliver now tagging the tail, Cyler Bertram in the #55 inherited the race lead and Bob Passwaters Sr in the #75 in second. Here is where the choosing of the lanes played the biggest part of the night. Everyone assumed Passwaters Sr would choose the outside of Bertram, but he didnt. Much to the suprise of us all and especially Kyle Grove in the #3, who now got to restart along side Bertram. Colton Ritchey, the points leader in the #21, would restart along side Passwaters Sr. Like a bullet out of a gun, Grove shot to lead and after a few laps, Ritchey followed. Oliver was absolutely charging his way to the front until Bertram slammed the door on an inside pass, ending both their nights. Grove started to pull away from Ritchey on the restart and it looked as though Grove would only gain a couple points. Then, coming to the white flag, the 15 year old rookie lost a motor. Grove would now take off a huge chuck of the points lead, instead of just a crumb with 3 races remaining. Following the Uhrichsville OH driver to his 6th feature victory and an early birthday present in the JD Byrider, CNAC Financing, El Pueblito Mexican Cuisine, TC Auto, Stewart's Flooring, Greg's Recovery, South Philly Pizza, Belknap's Body Shop Sponsored #3 were Passwaters Sr, Passwaters Jr, Josh Moss and Barker.
Next Saturday Night August 29th is The Late Model and Modified Twin 50's presented by Guess Motors. In addition to the Late Model's and Modified's running 50 lap features, Street Stocks, Compact's and Mini Truck's will also be on hand. Only 4 weeks left in the 2015 season and only 3 weeks left for the run for the Championship in each of our 5 Divisions. Now is the time to come out and support your local tracks!!
