Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| August 15, 2015 |
Another great night of racing took place this past Saturday Night August 15th at Midvale Speedway. Ferris Chevrolet presented $1 Hot Dog / $1 Pop Night and Kid's Race Car Rides at intermission. There were many smiles on both the fan's and driver's faces as on one of the fan favorite nights of the season. Sixty nine cars and trucks arrived at the Speedway on another beautiful weather weekend, mostly sunny skies and 85 degrees.
The first feature to take to the Speedway was the 25 lap Summit Racing Economy Modified's with the #36 of Mike Green and the #54 of Doug McMillen starting on the front row. Green would pull out to the early advantage as Phillip Cox in the #09 used the bottom to take second as McMillen would slip back quickly after getting stuck in the third lane. The first of four cautions flew on lap #9 with Green leading Cox, Brandon Bailey, Glen Jewell in a retro paint scheme and Bryce Allensworth. On the restart, Jewell would get around Bailey and then move up to challenge Cox for the second spot. The two would make contact, ending Jewell's promising night. Green continued to pace the field and each restart opened up a 5-6 car length advantage, only to have it nelegated because of a caution. The final one would wave just before the leaders came off turn four for the checkers, setting up a 1 lap, winner takes all shootout. At the drop of the Green (see what I did there), the #36 would again clear Cox off turn 2 and would hold on for the victory, his second in 2015. Following the Louisville OH driver in the All Parts Auto Care, Bob's Auto Sales, Diano Rental sponsored machine was Cox, Lucas Ripley, Bailey and Lee McCreery.
Bill Aubihl in the #31 and Bob Passwaters Sr in the #75 brought the JD Byrider Street Stock 20 lap feature to the line. Aubihl and Passwaters Sr would battle for the lead for the first circuit until Aubihl was able to clear Passwaters Sr and drop him into a battle with Larry Smith in the #44 for second. Those two would make contact off turn four bottling up the field and allowing Aubihl to put some space in between himself and the now second place battle of the 15yr old points leader Colton Ritchey in the #21 and the #77 of Todd Miller. After a few laps, Smith was able to work his way back up to second and set his sights on Aubihl. Smith tried a couple times to get to the inside of the #31 but was unable to make it work. Then on lap nine, he got the run down the back straightaway he was looking for and was able to get a run on Aubihl. As the two went into turn three, they made contact that sent the #31 spinning. After officials looked at the replay, it was determined that Smith was to the door of Aubihl when he closed the door, so the #31 was sent to the tail with Smith leading Ritchey, Tad Grove subbing for brother Kyle, Miller and Waylon Orr. On the final restart Grove was able to get around Ritchey for second but Ritchey had a bigger problem, he had a left front going soft. He was able to hang on to third for a few laps until the tire was almost completely out of air. Ritchey would start to drop spots and points over the final few laps as Grove closed on Smith. Smith, who has been close to a couple victories this season, would hold off Grove to pick up his first feature victory in 5+ years in the Stewart's Flooring, Joe's Auto Service, Appliance and More Sponsored #44. Following the Canton OH driver in the top 5 was Grove, Cyler Bertram, Miller and Orr.
Next up was the McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's for their 30 lap feature after having last week off. Doug Sommers in the #31 and Mike Miller in the #53 brought the field down to Chief Starter Jason Nealey's green flag. Miller jumped out to the race lead and pulled Jonathan Reitter in the #28 with him. Miller and Reitter started to distance themselves from Tom Stankiewicz in the #42 and Alex Rosenberry in the #2. After the first caution flew on lap 6, Reitter was able to take the lead via the outside lane and a lap later, Rosenberry moved to second. Miller would bring out the caution on lap 14 for breaking out of his qualifying time, sending him to the tail, although he would recover nicely. That would put Rosenberry in the preferred outside lane for the restart. Just as Rosenberry cleared Reitter, Bryant Smith spun on his own down the back straightaway and was forced to pull pit side. Rosenberry would dispose of Reitter on the restart and Bubba Smith would wheel into second. After the last caution flew with only a handful of laps remaining, Rosenberry would prove to have the best car on this night and would take his second victory of the season after finishing 5th the night before in The Main Event Racing Series contest at Toledo Speedway. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Flight Test, Rosenberry Towing sponsored #2 was Bubba, Stankiewicz, Reitter and Miller.
Ryan Shreffler subbing for his brother in the #24 and Zack Cogar filling in for Jim Keller Jr in the #28 led the field to start the 20 lap Canton Auto Salvage Compact Feature. Shreffler would race out front, Cristian Bailey in the #46 would move to second and Allen Clark in the #169 to third. The machine on the move was the green and white #4 from the 10th starting position. Blaine Salsberry was working the high side and picking off cars on his way to the front. By lap nine, Salsberry was up front and pulling away from a gaggle of cars arguing over second. With that many cars all bunched together, it was only a matter of time until the big one happened. On lap 14, Gage Jaberg, Dan Buckey and a few other machines bounced around like pinball's with Buckey spinning and getting hammered by Clayton Oliver. Oliver would continue but Buckey, who sits 3rd in points, took a huge hit in his title defense having to retire early. Jaberg was charged with the caution and sent to the back, although he would recover to finish 6th. Back under green, Salsberry continued to lead and Clark was able to get around Shreffler for second. Shreffler would get caught up in a turn four scuffle with 4 laps remaining Despite being able to continue after a pit stop, Shreffler's car would end up being heavily damaged in a final lap crash. After the restart, nobody was gonna touch Salsberry as he would cruise to his first win in 2015. Following the Sherrodsville OH driver in the Take 2, Buckey Mowing, Wissman Motorsports, Beaver Creek Landscaping sponsored #4 was Clark, Kyle Finlayson, Larry Ennis Jr and Larry Ennis Sr who was subbing for his son Wes, the points leader.
The final event of the evening was the 12 lap Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck Feature. The #751 of Alan Bedard and the #22 of Cody Jaberg started on the front row. Jaberg would take over the race lead and keep it for the first three circuits until the #23 of Dusty Nicholas made an exciting 3-wide pass on the outside for the race lead. Derek Cordia in the #72 and Joe Linard in the #82 were able to work their way around Jaberg, who continues to improve every week. Nicholas opened up a nice lead and by the time Linard was able to get around Cordia, the lead was too big with too little time to make it up. Linard was able to cut into the advantage, but Nicholas would pick up his 3rd feature victory and chop a big chunk of points off his step-dad's point lead. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the M&D Design's Sponsored #23 was Linard, Cordia, Jaberg and Bedard.
Next Saturday Night August 22 is the 29th Annual Cruise-in presented by McDonald's and McIntosh Oil Company. All 5 Divisions will be in action and the Cruise-in and Midvale Karting Series will be on hand at intermission. Stop out and join us as the Championship battles are going down to the wire as we close in on the final stages of the 2015 campaign.
