Berg Takes Kuester Implement 75
August 8, 2015
Berg Takes Kuester Implement 75Week #13 is in the books and it was a good one. The Super Cup Stock Car Series made its annual visit to Midvale Speedway with The Kuester Implement 75 Presented by Comp-Cal. Fifty two regular Division and eleven Super Cup Stock Cars made the haul to East Central Ohio under sunny skies and 82 degrees.

During pre race ceremonies, The Kuester Implement 75 Pole Award was presented to Larry Berg from Petersburg WVA after he scorched the 3/10 Mile Oval with a New Track Record for the Super Cup Stock Cars, a 14.951. There was also about a 20 minute autograph session for the series before we kicked off the evenings festivities. With the series having a re-draw for the top 6 starting positions, the #51 of Harvey Harrison started on the pole with the series current points leader and winner of 2 of the first 3 races, the #00 of Dan Bainey starting along side. Harrison was able to take the point early on with Bainey, Brandon Harrison in the #5, Tim McLaughlin in the #21 and the #15 of Brian Harrison following in the top 5. The first caution flew on lap two between the #15 and #5 in turns 1 and 2. While under caution, 2-time Super Cup Stock Car Series winner at Midvale Speedway and the defending Champion Kevin Kromer took his #77 behind the wall and would not return after more terrible luck in 2015. Also pulling pit side was the #52 of Kyle Kromer who had damage from the accident in turn one. Back under green, the fastest qualifier Berg was charging in his #7 from the 6th starting position and would take over 3rd after a 3-wide pass in turn 2. As Berg was charging, so was Bainey in his "Day's of Thunder / Cole Trickle City Chevrolet" retro paint scheme machine. Bainey would take over the top spot on lap five with a nice inside pass of the #51. After some green flag racing with a couple of cautions sprinkled in the middle, Bainey looked to have control until he started to experience some softness in the brake pedal. Berg was able to wrestle the lead away on the back stretch on lap 27, after some contact that could have ended both of their nights. Harvey Harrison and Bainey would swap the second and third positions a few times behind Berg who had built up a nice advantage under the long green flag run. After a couple cautions in the middle to late stages of the event it ended up coming down to an 8 lap shootout for the win. The main players were Berg, Harvey Harrison, Bainey and Brandon Harrison. Berg was able to get a good final restart and run laps close to what he qualified, nobody else could quite match that pace. Berg, who was making only his second series start and only his second start with 4 wheel's as he is a former motorcycle racer, would drive into Downtown Ford Victory Lane and claim his first career series win in The Kuester Implement 75 Presented by Comp-Cal. Following the Petersburg WVA driver in the Grant Country Mulch Chevrolet was points leader Bainey, Harvey Harrison, Brandon Harrison and Tim McLaughlin finishing out the top 5.

The first feature of the evening was the Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck 12 lapper. The #95 of Michael Varnes and Derek Cordia in the #72 started on the front row. Cordia took the early advantage but Keith Anderson was rollin' in the #32. Keith took over his step-son Dusty Nicholas' ride for the evening after losing an engine in his truck. Anderson, the points leader over Nicholas by only 19 points coming in, made quick work of the field and was out front by the time the field reached the back straightaway on lap 2. By the halfway point, Anderson had a half straightaway lead over Cordia and Joe Linard in the #82 as they argued over second. As the race went caution free, Anderson cruised to his 7th feature victory of the season. Following the Dog Gone Trucking, M&D Design's Sponsored #32 from Barnhill OH to the line was Cordia, Linard, Varnes and Preston Kelly. Cordia was disqualified for passing up the tech area after the event, giving Linard the runner-up spot.

The second feature to hit the track was the Summit Racing Economy Modified 25 lap event with Doug McMillen in the #54 and Andrew Wise in the #14 bringing the field down for Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. McMillen would lead the first six circuits with Phillip Cox in the #09 and Wise right behind. The first caution flew on lap 7 and on the restart, the lead duo made contact in turn three. Cox was charged with the caution, sending him to the tail. McMillen would continue to lead with Brandon Bailey in the #55 now in second and Lee McCreery in the #2 marching up to 3rd after starting 9th. McCreery would take the second spot from Bailey on lap 13 and Bryce Allensworth would follow in the #21 to third. A couple more quick cautions that sent Allensworth to the tail while battling for second and Braden Swaney in the #27 while battling for 3rd, McMillen was still out front. However, on a lap 17 restart, McCreery was able to wrestle the top spot away from McMillen who would fade in the outside lane after the final restart on lap 19. McCreery was in control and would pick up his first win in 2015. Behind him, Swaney would make the move of the night to take over the final podium spot with a 3-wide move on the bottom side of Cox and fastest qualifier and point leader Bob Sibla Jr in the #82. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the M&D Design's, Riddle Trucking, Gribble Fabrication, R&R Carb Service, Massillon Machine, Sick Puppy Tattoo Sponsored #2 was Bailey for the second week in a row, Swaney, Sibla Jr and Cox.

After the Super Cup 75, Todd Miller in the #77 and Bob Passwaters Jr in his #74 would lead the JD Byrider Street Stock 20 lap feature to the stripe. Passwaters Jr led lap one by feet on the outside of Miller when point leader Colton Ritchey in the #21 got into the #28 of Waylon Orr off turn four on lap 2. Passwaters Jr would use the inside lane to take the lead on the restart with Gary Hoopingarner in the #1 following. Miller would be freight trained by the bottom feeders as Orr would move to third. "Magic Shoes" would start to work on the Passwaters Jr machine, looking high and low several times. Finally, Hoopy was able to take the race lead in the second groove on lap 8 after a good battle. Orr would sneak his way by Passwaters Jr to move to second but Passwaters Jr wouldn't give it up easily. Orr, Passwaters Jr, Larry Smith in the #44 and Kyle Grove in the #3 all spent about 5 laps arguing over positions 2-5 behind Hoopingarner who had 5 car lengths over the field. The final caution would wave on lap 13 as Smith and Grove would make contact in turn 2, causing Smith a flat left rear tire and Grove and Ritchey front end damage. On the restart, Hoopy was able to keep control of the race as all eyes were on Grove as he stormed back to the front after being sent to the tail for the contact with Smith. Grove would be able to chip a few more points off Ritchey's lead as he blasted up to 3rd at the finish. But it was Hoopingarner's day to shine as he picked up his first win of the season in the Express Services Sponsored #1. Rounding out the top 5 behind the Perry OH driver was Orr, Grove, Passwaters Jr and Cyler Bertram.

The final feature of the evening was the 20 lapper for the Canton Auto Salvage Compact's. Alan Clark in the #169 and Jason Shaw in Cristian Bailey's #46 bringing the field down for the start. Clark was able to take the race lead as the #50 of Wes Ennis was on a mission. Ennis and Joe Oliver have 3 victories apiece so far in the #50. Ennis was up to second as the only caution of the event waved on lap 5 for the #16M of Mike McDonald, who lost a wheel and hit the turn four wall. On the restart, Clark battled hard but Ennis was just too strong. Ennis would build up a big lead as current point runner up and last weeks winner Gage Jaberg in the #21 worked his way to second on lap 12. Jaberg continued to cut into the Ennis lead but ran out of time. He was able to cut it to 3 car lengths at the finish line but the Stewart's Flooring, Oliver's Garage, Bad Boy Sandblaster's Sponsored #50 would pick up its 7th win on the season and the New Philadelphia OH driver would break the tie with Oliver, picking up his 4th. Following Ennis, who stretched out his point lead, was Jaberg, Clark, Dan Buckey and Britt Vanmeter.
