Twin 40's in the Books
August 1, 2015
Twin 40's in the BooksSaturday night was Quaker Digital Academy / PCTC / Fan Appreciation - Autograph Night at "Thunder In The Valley". Sixty Five Cars and Trucks made the trip under partly cloudy skies and 77 degrees, and did I mention a full moon?

The first feature to take to the Speedway was the 25 lap Summit Racing Economy Modified's. Shawn Kaufman in the #10 and Shawn Marder in the #25 brought the field in for green. Kaufman would inch ahead thru turns one and two and lead the opening circuit. Marder slipped off turn 4 on lap two causing a massive pile-up, eliminating Mike Bowers and Bryce Allensworth among others. After a lengthy delay to clean up the accident and transport an injured track official to the hospital, Braden Swaney in the #27 looked to have a strong enough car to contend. Swaney took the advantage through the first two corners until his throttle cable snapped, leaving him dead in the water. Back under green it was Lucas Ripley's turn in the #0. Ripley has been close a number of times to his first career feature victory, but somehow multiple circumstances haven't allowed it to happen. Ripley would take the top spot and start to inch away with Rick Sibla in the #82, who was subbing for his brother, not too far behind. The final caution flew on lap 9, and the final restart would be crucial. Ripley was able to get a nice jump and clear Sibla, bringing Brandon Bailey in the #55 and Rick Elkins Jr with him, dropping Sibla to 4th. So now the top 2 were looking for their first career feature wins. The top three would remain nose to tail but Ripley never faltered. Following the Uhrichsville OH driver to his first career feature win in the Brandle Trucking, Deenhem Oil Field, Canal House Sponsored #0 was Bailey, Elkins Jr, Sibla and Doug McMillen. The track official that was injured is doing good with multiple injuries, thankfully nothing severe. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

Next up was the first Twin 40, this one for the Street Stock's. Brian Lewis Sr in the #39 and the #03 of Chase Hughes brought the field down for the start. Hughes was able to slide out front with Mike Martin, filling in for TJ Barker in the #11, and the #31 of Bill Aubihl following. Bob Passwaters Sr in the #75 was on the move in his green machine. Passwaters Sr was able to dispose of the front three and take over the lead via the outside lane on lap five. The first caution flew on lap 6, bunching up the field. Larry Smith in the #44 worked his way to 3rd after starting towards the back and Kyle Grove in the #3 started last because of the complete invert, he was up to 6th. On the restart Passwaters continued to lead but Smith was strong in the outside lane, working around Hughes for second and would eventually get around the #75 on a restart on lap 8. Smith started to check out during a long stretch of green flag racing. By lap 25, Passwaters Sr started to inch closer and Grove finally picked his way to third but was quite a ways back. As the laps clicked away, Smith held off Passwaters Sr despite his handling starting to go away. Grove was coming, diving deep into the corners, quick back to the throttle and power down the straightaway's. With six circuits remaining, the front three were now nose to tail. The lead trio would battle hard until Passwaters Sr and Smith would get together off turn 2, cutting Smith's left rear and sending him spinning into heartbreak in turn 4. On the final restart the fastest qualifier who started last on the field would take over the top spot and sail into victory lane. Following the Uhrichsville OH driver in the JD Byrider, CNAC Financing, El Pueblito Mexican Cuisine, TC Auto, Stewart Flooring, Greg's Recovery, South Philly Pizza, Belknap's Body Shop Sponsored #3 was Passwaters Sr, Aubihl, Colton Ritchey and Gary Hoopingarner.

The 30 lap Late Model Feature was the third of the evening and Dave Martin in the #3 and Rick Sibla in the #21 brought the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's green flag. Sibla would lead with Bob Schneider Jr in second and Doug Sommers in third. On lap 4 Matthew Mills worked his way to second and Glenn Gault Jr had worked his way to third. Gault in his third time out in the brand new #32 was able to wrestle the lead away from Sibla on lap 15 after an exciting six lap battle. Gault appeared to have the best car but with a crate engine, did not want to see a caution. Bubba Smith in the #12 was able to get through to third and then Jason Cramer in the #29 spun off turn 4. Not what Gault needed because that is where the crate engines are at a disadvantage, getting the torque off the corner on a restart. After a failed restart for Gault holding Mills high in turn 4, the green was back out. Gault would hang on to the top spot but Mills slipped off turn two and dropped several spots. That put Bubba behind Gault with Bryant Smith in 3rd. Neither Bubba or Bryant appeared to have anything for the orange and black #32 until Cramer lost a motor in turn three with only three laps remaining. On the first attempt at a restart, Gault had Bubba pinned in the third lane trying to stall out his momentum, just as he did to Mills earlier. This time Mills would get tagged from behind in the chain reaction, ending his night. On final restart, Bubba and Gault would again make some contact but this time Smith was able to scoot out front and pull away to victory. Following the Canton OH driver in the Smith's Auto Sales, Freedom Auto Finance, Finish Line Motor's, Finish Line Design's Sponsored # 12 was Gault Jr, Bryant Smith, Tom Stankiewicz and Sommers.

The second Twin 40 was up next and Korey Herron in the #30 and the #01 of Hunter Corbett brought the Compact field to the line. Herron would lead but all eyes we're in the middle part of the pack where Wes Ennis was making 3 and 4 wide moves on several occasions trying desperately to get to the front. After starting 12th, Ennis was up to 5th when the caution flew on lap three. The #16M of Mike McDonald was able to take the lead away from Herron until lap 5 when Cristian Bailey in the #46 took over the point. By lap eight, Ennis was up to second and following him to the front, a little more patiently, was fastest qualifier Gage Jaberg in the #21 who started 13th. Bailey did a nice job of holding off the faster duo behind him until the caution waved on lap 15. On the restart Bailey went up the hill to block Ennis and that opened the door for Jaberg. The youngster would drive off into the full moonlight with a straightaway victory ahead of Ennis and a great battle between Mike Swaney, Bailey and Britt Vanmeter for the 3rd position. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Rt. 39 Auto Salvage, Michael Taylor Allstate Insurance, C&K Auto Service, Fox Auto Salvage and Parts Sponsored #21 was Ennis, Vanmeter, Bailey and Dan Buckey. Swaney finished third but was disqualified after post race inspection.

The final feature was the Finish Line Motor's Mini Truck 12 lapper with the #22 of Cody Jaberg and the #95 of Michael Varnes on the front row. Jaberg took the advantage in the bottom lane until Varnes and Jaberg got together in turn four, giving Jaberg a flat tire and ending his night. Varnes would lead the first three circuits until points leader Keith Anderson in the #32 showed up. Anderson who has had some engine gremlins the last several weeks, appears to have finally sorted them out as he raced off in the lead and left everyone else to argue over second. Dusty Nicholas was able to work around Derek Codia for second and he started to pull away a little bit as Cordia fell into the clutches of Joe Linard. Linard in his new #82 truck was able to take over the 3rd spot on lap ten. Over the final two laps, Linard was able to close up on Nicholas but those two had nothing for Anderson. Following the Barnhill OH driver in the Dog Gone Trucking, M&D Design's Sponsored #32 was Nicholas, Linard, Varnes and Cordia.

Next Saturday Night August 8th is The Super Cup Stock Car Series 75. Modified's, Street Stock's, Mini Truck's, Compact's and Spectator Drags at intermission. Thank you to all the Driver's,Team's, Official's and Fans for another successful night at "Thunder In The Valley".
