Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| July 11, 2015 |
Another special night at Midvale Speedway for VanMeter's Auto Repair / Federated Auto Parts Christmas in July night. Fans were treated to many giveaways from our great supporters and partners and the kids that went home with new bicycles made memories that will last a lifetime. Another great field of cars, 71 to be exact, lined the pit area under sunny skies and 83 degrees.
The first feature to roll onto the Speedway was the Summit Racing Economy Modified's for their 25 lapper. Braden Swaney in the #27 and Tad Grove in the #3 started on the front row. Last week this division was a disaster, tonight it was the complete opposite. Grove would jump out to the lead from the outside lane and started to put a little distance between himself and the second place battle between Swaney and veteran Glen Jewell in the #24. On lap four, Jewell would make the move around Swaney and set his sights on the leader. Jewell quickly caught Grove but passing him was another story. The duo continue to distance themselves from the rest of the field. Kevin McClintock was able to pick his way up to third by lap ten in his #38, but was almost a full straightaway behind the lead battle and in need of a caution. Jewell looked high, he looked low, he even looked over and under at one point. But Grove drove the perfect line, kept his momentum, didnt put a wheel wrong and was able to hold off the challenge from Jewell to pick up the victory that went caution free. Following the Uhrichsville OH driver in the JD Byrider, CNAC Financing, Greg's Recovery, Finish Line Designs sponsored #3 was Jewell, McClintock, Bryce Allensworth and Brandon Bailey.
Next to take to the 3/10 mile oval was the Street Stock 20 lap event. Chase Hughes in the #03 and TJ Barker in the #11 brought the field in for green. Barker was able to get a good start and drop to the bottom with the race lead. Robbie Patterson back in his #80 would battle with Hughes for second until Patterson's night would end early. He got out of shape down the back straight on lap two and drilled the Bob Passwaters Jr #74 machine in the door as he was spinning, sending the #80 to the pits with a busted radiator. Back under green, Barker appeared as though he may have the car to stay up front, taking the lead once again. Thats when "Wheelin" Waylon Orr in the #28, Kyle Grove in the #3 and Gary Hoopingarner in the #1 showed up to the party. Orr was the first to get there and was able to take over the race lead with an inside pass in turn three. It would take several laps for the #3 to pick his way from deep in the field to get to Orr. "Magic Shoes" in the #1 would even take longer as he started at the rear and was sent to the back for avoidable contact on lap nine. Once Grove and Hoopy got to Orr, the trio would put on a show over the final 5 laps as Barker tried to stay with them but had some power issues. Orr would not make a mistake and despite losing some horsepower with an overheating engine, had enough muscle to hang on as Grove would nip Hoopy for the runner-up spot. Completing the top five behind the Mallett Energy, Buckey Mowing sponsored #28 from New Philadelphia OH was Grove, Hoopingarner, Barker and Hughes.
Matthew Mills in the #4 and the #6 of Larry Baker brought the field to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's Green Flag for the 30 lap Late Model feature. After a couple botched restarts and a chain reaction accident on the back straightaway that put us under a brief red flag for cleanup, Mills would lead lap one. After another caution for a nasty wreck involving Todd Ripley in the #22 and Johnny Hughes in the #03, Mills would be forced to pit because of a severe tire rub on the right rear after contact on the restart. Alex Rosenberry in the #2 would take over the point and start to set sail. Rosenberry who had front brake issues in the Downtown Ford 100 a week ago, appeared to have his issues sorted out after a sub-par qualifying effort. As the #1 of Bryant Smith and the #53 of Mike Miller traded paint, decals, rubber and maybe even a few choice words arguing over second, Rosenberry's poor qualifying effort bit him. He was sent to the tail on lap 19 for breaking out of his qualifying time. That landed the Bryant Smith machine on the inside line, Miller on the outside and Marcus Malcuit in the #75 restarting third. On the restart, Malcuit and Miller would make contact in turn two, ending Malcuit's night with a flat right front tire. Bubba Smith in the #12 was making a charge from the twelfth starting spot and was able to get up to 3rd, but his brother would bring home the victory holding off Miller and his ill handling#53. Rounding out the top 5 behind the Canton OH driver in the Canton Auto Salvage, Finish Line Designs, Freedom Auto Finance sponsored #1 was Miller, Bubba, Doug Sommers and Tom Stankiewicz.
The 20 lap Canton Auto Salvage Compacts were up next with the #169 of Alan Clark and the #24 of Brent Shreffler bringing them down for the start. Shreffler led the opening four circuits as Larry Ennis Jr in the #57 battled with Clark. On lap five, Ennis Jr was able to use the inside lane to take the race lead away from Shreffler. Working his way up from the eighth starting spot was Wes Ennis in the #50 an the #4 of Blaine Salsberry who started scratch. On lap six Wes was able to make a 3 wide pass for second as the brother's Ennis started to pull away. On lap nine Wes was able to dispose of Larry Jr on the back straightaway after using a lapped car as a pick. Salsberry was up to fifth when the caution flew at lap nine. On the restart Salsberry would battle up to the second spot, but it took him a couple laps to clear Ennis Jr and Dan Buckey in the #69. Once clear, Salsberry ate into the lead but ran out of time as Wes ended up with the hardware in victory lane. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the Stewart's Flooring, Oliver's Garage, Bad Boy Sandblaster's sponsored #50 was Salsberry, Buckey, Ennis Jr and Kyle Finlayson.
The final race of the evening was the Finish Line Motors Mini Truck 12 lap event. This division had its biggest truck count this week and some more trucks on the horizon in the next few weeks. Michael Varnes in the #95 and Keith Anderson, the current points leader, brought the field to the start / finish line. Anderson was able to take over the top spot with a truck that may be a little down on power, but handles like nobody's business. Colt Locker in the #118 was up to second after his dad drove the truck to victory one week ago. Locker's truck has a ton of power but is a handful from the center and off of the corner, being very free. Lap after lap Locker would try to get a run in the outside lane and lap after lap he would get along side, only to lose the back-end. On lap nine Dusty Nicholas in the #23 would make it an exciting three way fight for the win. Going into turn three on the final circuit, a lapped truck got in the way for Locker and Nicholas, causing a 3-wide scramble. The three made contact with Nicholas getting the worst, a flat and a spin to the infield. The best handling truck with the most experienced driver in this division held on to pick up the win. Following the Barnhill OH driver in the Dog Gone Trucking, M&D Designs sponsored #32 was Locker, Nicholas, Derek Cordia, and Varnes.
Next week the MSA Super Modified's will make their annual visit to Midvale Speedway with Late Model's, Street Stocks, Mini Trucks and Compacts rounding out the card.
Again, a HUGE THANK YOU to VanMeter's Auto Repair and Federated Auto Parts along with all of our other sponsors, partners and everyone who donated a bicycle or money towards a bicycle! Without ALL OF YOU, Christmas in July would not have been a huge success.
