Ohio's Fun Place to Race!! 2024 Race Season |
| May 2, 2015 |
Once again Mother Nature smiled upon Midvale Speedway with beautiful mostly sunny skies and lower 70's for All Parts Auto Care / Twin State Auto Racing Club Night at "Thunder In The Valley". Seventy plus machines entered through the Pit Gate, including thirteen Spectator Drag participants for their first competition of the year. Once again, another good crowd witnessed some Hot and Heavy action on week #2.
First on track was The Canton Auto Salvage Compact's for their 20 lap feature. Christian Bailey in the #46 and Korey Herron in the #30 brought the field down for the start. Bailey raced out to the early lead and brought the #17 of Laney Striejewske along with him on the bottom. After an early caution, Bailey started to really build a descent lead, leaving Striejewske to battle it out with Adam Mishler in the #69 and the #19 of Clayton Oliver. On lap five, Bailey would lose his big lead after receiving the black flag for running two laps under his qualifying time. That gave the lead to Striejewske for a half lap until Mishler and Clayton split her down the back straight. The #50 Lightning McQueen Machine of Joe Oliver was on the move from the back of the pack and had moved to 3rd after Striejewske and the #24 of Brent Shreffler made contact, sending Striejewske to the pits for repairs and the Shreffler car to the tail. After the restart, Oliver set sail on the high side and never looked back. Not even a late race restart or his "haters" were going to deny him his first win in a couple seasons at Midvale. Following the Canton OH driver in the Stewart's Flooring, Oliver's Garage, Bad Boy Sandblaster's sponsored #50 was Clayton Oliver, Mike Swaney (who was later disqualified for failing post-race Inspection), Jim Keller, Kyle Finlayson and Justin Renicker.
Next to take to the 3/10ths Mile Oval was The Summit Racing Economy Modifieds for their 25 lapper. Brandon Bailey in the #55 and 2-time defending Points Champion Kevin McClintock in the #38 paced the field. McClintock worked quickly to the front from the outside lane, with Glen Jewell in the #24 racing into second from the 4th starting spot. After a lap five caution, Jewell and McClintock put on a great show. Side by side, wheel to wheel for the top spot. Lap after lap, restart after restart, Jewell was bound and determined to make the second groove work. Finally, after a lap 11 restart, Jewell drove as deep into turn one as you possibly can without ending up in the parking lot, making it stick and taking over the point. McClintock lost second spot a lap later to the fastest qualifier Preston Walker in the #30, who was slicing and dicing his way to the front. McClintock continued to fade and would pull to the Pits a few laps later with mechanical issues. Walker and Jewell battled for the lead until the two made some contact off turn 4, sending Jewell up the hill. When Jewell came back down to defend the second spot, Tim Allensworth in the #21 this week for Bryce who was at his Prom, was already there. The two made hard contact entering turn one, sending Jewell out of the event and Allensworth to the Pits for a flat on lap nineteen. On the final restart, opening night feature winner Bob Sibla Jr. had his opportunity to take the lead, but Walker was right where he wanted to be. He showed why he had the best car on this night; soaring off into victory lane in the All Parts Auto Care, Bob's Auto Sales, Diano Rental sponsored #30. Following the Akron OH driver in the top five was Bob Sibla Jr., Rick Elkins Jr., Lee McCreery and Chris Piehl.
The JD Byrider Street Stocks were next to go out for their 20 lap event. Robbie Patterson and Bob Passwaters Sr. led the field to the stripe. Patterson and Passwaters Sr. would battle side by side for 2 failed initial starts and the first 2 laps. Patterson got loose off turn 4, walked up the hill and made contact with Passwaters Sr., ending Patterson's night. On the restart, Bill Aubihl was back behind the wheel of his #31 and running in the second position behind Passwaters Sr., until he cut a left front tire, sending him to the infield. While all that was going on, the #3 of Kyle Grove was coming. Grove sometimes gets a bad rap for his aggressive ways and sometimes it is warranted, but tonight Grove was smooth, clean and FAST. Grove checked out to almost a full straightaway lead before a lap 18 caution would wave. On the final restart, 14 year old rookie Colton Ritchey in the #21 would take away the second spot from Passwaters Sr. for the 2nd week in a row. Ritchey drives like a seasoned veteran and not like a 14 yr old. Kids wanting to get into racing could watch this Division and see some future stars in the making. Following the Uhrichsville OH driver in the JD Byrider, CNAC Financing, El Pueblito Mexican Cuisine, TC Auto, Stewart's Flooring, Greg's Recovery, Belknap's Body Shop sponsored #3 was Ritchey, Passwaters Sr., Cody Parker and TJ Barker.
The McIntosh Oil Company Late Model's were next to see who would receive one of the beautiful plaques from Twin State Auto Racing Club in victory lane. Defending Points Champion Bob Schneider Jr. in the #17 and Doug Sommers in the #31 brought the field down to Chief Starter Terry Colletti's Green Flag to kick off the 30 lap event. Schneider worked his way out front with Alex Rosenberry in the #2 close in tow. A good 10 lap, 3 way battle for the top spot would ensue until it appeared Rosenberry touched Schneider coming off turn 4, sending Schneider spinning and Rosenberry to the tail. On the restart, Sommers was able to take the lead away and opening night feature winner Bubba Smith was up to second spot in his #12 machine. Mid pack, Bryant Smith in the #1 and Rosenberry in the #2 were charging to the front when the two made contact off turn 4 on lap eighteen, sending Rosenberry hard into the front stretch wall. Smith was black flagged for rough driving and Rosenberry sent off on the rollback. That incident set up the final restart where Bubba Smith, who is quickly becoming Midvale's version on the restart master, shot off turn four like he was shot out of a cannon, to take the lead in turn one. Sommers who has a Crate Engine, which is known for reliability but can lag on restarts, can only watch the Finish Line Motors, Finish Line Designs, Smith Auto Sales and Freedom Auto Finance #12 take his second feature victory in a row to start the season and 4th overall, dating back to last year. Following the North Canton OH driver to the stripe was Sommers, Mike Miller, Jonathan Reitter and Todd Ripley.
The final event of the evening was the 15 lap Finish Line Motors Mini Truck feature. John Pritchett in the #15 and Cody Jaberg in the #22 brought the increased truck field to the green. Pritchett raced out front until he and the #72 of Derek Cordia touched in turn four, causing Pritchett to have to get on the binders, leaving Jaberg with no where to go. Jaberg would not be able to continue but Pritchett would after some repairs pit side. On the restart, Cordia would battle with Keith Anderson in the #32 and Chet Collmar in the #2 for the top spot until Anderson had a radiator hose blow, ending his bid at two in a row to start the season. On the final restart, Rookie and fastest qualifier Dusty Nicholas added his name to the battle. Cordia, Collmar and Nicholas would swap positions every corner until Nicholas pushed the go button with 3 to go. Nicholas was tired of waiting and made a veteran crossover move to the bottom off turn four to get his first taste of the lead in a feature event. Cordia and Collmar would duke it out for second but Nicholas delivered the knockout left hook and punched his ticket to victory lane for the first time in his young career. Following the New Philadelphia OH driver in the M&D Designs, McIntyre Plumbing sponsored #23 was Collmar, Cordia, Preston Kelly and Pritchett.
The next event at Midvale Speedway is Saturday night May 9th for fan favorite $1 Dog / $1 Pop Night. Pit gates open at 2:30, Hot Laps and Grandstands at 3, Qualifying at 4:45 and Racing Action at 6:30. Please come out and support your local tracks.
