Perry & Schullick Claim Big Midvale Wins
September 1, 2014
Perry & Schullick Claim Big Midvale WinsThe JD Byrider 75 for the Great Lakes Helicopter Service Main Event Racing Series super late models at Midvale Speedway on Labor Day Monday saw a great race, even after a two hour rain delay that would have cancelled racing action at nearly any other facility on the tour. The 75 lap affair would be won by two time Main Event Racing Series champion Bud Perry in the #10 Redskin Motorsports car, holding off a hard charging Harold Fair Jr. in the #71 Royal Truck and Trailer Senneker chassis for the final handful of laps after a lap 70 restart saw Fair edge Perry at the line. Marcus Malcuit in the #75 VP Racing Fuels sponsored ride would set fast time of the evening at a pace of 13.267 seconds, narrowly missing Jimmy Carter's track record of 13.262 set back on Independence Day weekend earlier this season.

Veteran late model racers Tim Ice in the #65 Howe chassis and the #7 Miller Lite sponsored car of Rich Rohrer sat on the front row for the start. The two share six MERS championships and nearly 30 feature wins on the tour. Rohrer and Bud Perry took first and second from Ice respectively on the restart, followed in the following few laps by Jeff Ganus in the #18 Direct Detail/Senneker Performance car and Harold Fair Jr to take third and fourth. Fair would pass Ganus with ten laps in the books for third as Perry would pass Rohrer for the lead in the following lap. Emerson Huffman would spin with 17 laps in, setting up a restart with Perry, Rohrer, Fair, Ganus, and Ice the top five. The restart would be a no-go as a handful of cars including long time late model competitors Bobby Gainer and John Flynn would spin in turn one. Gainer would have to pit with extensive rear body section damage, rejoining the tail end of the field when the car was fixed.

Harold Fair Jr would get under Rich Rohrer and pass him for second on the restart, followed by Jeff Ganus taking the third position from Rohrer the same way a few laps later. Bobby Gainer would give up in his #01 around the halfway point in the race, out for the remainder of the event. John Flynn in the #26 Clover Contractors FLF chassis powered by Griff's Racing Engines would loop his car in turn four with 35 laps in the race. The top five for the restart would be Perry, Fair, Ganus, Rohrer, and Ice. Ganus would pass Fair for second once the field settled into a pace, followed by Alex Rosenberry in the FliteTest sponsored #2 racecar passing Tim Ice for fifth. Brian Clay in the #30 car and Flynn would spin in turn two with twenty five laps to go. Perry, Ganus, Fair, Rohrer, and Rosenberry would be the top five for the restart. Perry would jump the start on the restart, causing fast qualifier Marcus Malcuit to spin in turn one. The restart order would remain the same and Perry would take the lead legitimately on the start this time through.

Alex Rosenberry would take fourth from outside pole sitter Rich Rohrer with twenty laps to go. Jeff Ganus, defending Labor Day weekend MERS winner, would break with just thirteen laps to go in the race. The order for the restart would be Bud Perry, Harold Fair Jr., Rosenberry, Rohrer, and five time MERS champion Gary Whipkey Jr in the #59 car. Rohrer would get a flat left front tire on the restart after contact with Rosenberry and Whipkey, setting up another restart with twelve laps to go. Perry, Fair, Rosenberry, Whipkey, and Marcus Malcuit would be the top five at this juncture of the race. Rosenberry's car was obviously giving up after the contact, heading to the back in a hurry allowing Drew Charlson to take the fifth running position. Malcuit would spin Whipkey off of turn two with ten laps to go in the race, and the restart would be with Perry, Fair, Whipkey, Charlson, and John Flynn holding the top five running positions.

Drew Charlson went to third on the restart from the outside groove with the leaders battling side by side in front of him. Tim Ice and Gary Whipkey would spin on the backstretch with six laps to go, setting up a restart with Bud Perry, Harold Fair Jr, Charlson, John Flynn, and Ice sitting in the top five as Whipkey was out of the event. This restart would see Charlson, Fair, Ice, and Marcus Malcuit tangle lightly, causing another restart with the same lineup with just six laps to go in the seventy five lapper. Fair would go on to jump two restarts, but when the field finally got going, the racing was artwork, as Fair would hold Perry to the very inside of the track to lead lap seventy. Unfortunately for Fair, that was his last lap as leader, as Perry would power around to lead the final five circuits of the JD Byrider 75. The finishing order was Perry, Fair, Charlson, Flynn, Ice, Brian Clay, Malcuit, and Emerson Huffman.

An unbelievable field of 35 Modifieds were pitside for the Monday special, despite the last minute reschedule with Sunday’s rain. In qualifying, the top 16 were locked in, while 8 more came from the last chance race. Officials were going to do two features if the field of cars approached 38 cars or more. In the time trial session, veteran Kenny Phillips set the unofficial Modified track record with a 14.394 to lock himself in. Aaron Prater, Norm Taylor, Dave Dobbins, and Scott Archer competed the top five.

In a last chance race, that looked much like a full size feature, Tigh Schaffer held off strong challenges from Matt Wilson to claim the victory. Rounding out the cars that transferred were Lee McCreery, Tyler Noeske, Matt Jakimyszyn, Brad Copen, Kevin McClintock, and Tim Westerfield, Jr. In all, 18 cars started the race with 15 making it to the finish.

Top qualifying, Kenny Phillips rolled the dice for a twelve invert, ironically putting his son Craig on the pole with Tyler Schullick alongside. When the green dropped on the 40-lap grind, Schullick used the outside lane to race in front of the 24-car field. Phillips dropped into second and was fending off challenges from the first crate car in the rundown, Bubba Smith. Amazingly, despite the furious racing action throughout the field, the first six laps went caution free.

Early on, Schullick held off challenges from Phillips, Smith, and Joe Quinn. Quinn, who ran well during last year’s race, moved into second on lap nine, after a number of restarts. The top five shuffled some just past the midway point when Joe Shannon, who was running strong, made some slight contact with Quinn on the exit of turn two, creating a spin. Shannon went pitside, while Quinn continued.

Quinn got the final chance at Schullick in the highlane on a lap 23 restart. Schullick easily pulled ahead though, and last year’s winner, Doug Meyer, moved into second. As lap-after-lap clicked off, Meyer could not make a run needed to take his second straight Open Modified win.

As the checkered waved, it was 18-year old Tyler Schullick, driving the Scott’s Sports Cards/Kendra’s Screen Print #61 taking the victory in his first ever visit to Midvale. The Vermillion, Ohio driver works on the Thorsport Truck team and wouldn’t have been at the track if the event was held Sunday due to his commitments in Canada. The rain out worked wonderfully for the young driver, winning at his third different track this season. Schullick had previously claimed wins at Sandusky and Lorain.

Following Schullick were Meyer, Kenny Phillips who made a great late race run to move into a podium spot, Quinn, and Dave Dobbins who rallied late as well. The rest of the top ten were Craig Phillips, Aaron Prater, Brad Copen, Chad Lemmerman, and Matt Wilson.

Chase Hughes and Josh Moss brought a nice field of J.D. Byrider Street Stocks to the green for the 20-lap feature. Moss raced out front and held off a challenge by Waylon Orr early. After a lap six restart, Moss was passed momentarily by Bob Passwaters, Sr., but after two laps Moss moved back into the top spot. Moss continued his stranglehold of the lead until a lap 16 restart slated Dennis Wood alongside. Wood proved to be too strong, as he has for much of the season’s second half. Wood raced to his sixth win in seven nights. Following the current point runner-up was Orr, Gary Hoopingarner, Bob Passwaters, Jr., and Bob Passwaters, Sr. The rest of the top ten were Moss, Mike Martin, Cody Collmar, Tom Earley, and Hughes. Passwaters, Sr. and Orr won the heats, while Wood set fast time. With Martin’s bad luck continuing and Wood’s strong success, the point differential is now only four between the two entering the final point night.

The final race of the night was the 20-lap Canton Auto Salvage Compact feature. 18 cars lined up for the start with point leader, Dan Buckey, assuming the early lead. His lead was short lived, though, as division front-runner for the last month, Kyle Rector, flew by him on the second lap to starting building a sizable advantage. The night’s fast qualifier, Justin Renicker, wasn’t going to quit, though, as he squeaked by Buckey on lap four to move into second. Renicker was turning laps quicker on a consistent basis and caught Rector on the final lap. As the pair raced down the backstretch, Renicker drove to the inside and made the pass for the lead. As the field crossed the line, it was Renicker taking his second feature win of the season in his RB Motors/PM Realty #175. Rector was followed by the three point contenders, Buckey, Tim Frederick, and Clayton Oliver. Other top ten finishers were Blaine Salsberry, Wes Ennis, Larry Ennis, Jr., Laney Striejewske, and Allen Clark. Rector, Salsberry, and Chase Beatty won the heats.

Up next will be the 2014 Season Championships this Saturday, September 6. All five divisions will be on hand racing for double points on the final night points will be distributed. The wild skid plate race will also be held.

Going into the night, seven time Midvale track champion, Mike Miller holds just a 16 point lead on Bob Schneider, Jr., who is looking for his first championship. Ron Kirkpatrick, Alex Rosenberry, and Larry Baker complete the top five in the standings. Matthew Mills, Rick Sibila, Bryant Smith, and Tom Stankiewicz round out the top nine, while Randy Smart and Joe Linard are tied for the tenth and final spot that is awarded at the banquet.

Only one champion is already determined and that is in the Summit Racing Economy Modified class. Kevin McClintock has a 176 point lead over Mike Bowers who is just two points ahead of Jason Grewell in second. Rookie Don Boron, Jr. and Glen Jewell complete the top five. Shawn Marder, Lee McCreery, Ujcich Racing, Chris Piehl, and Bob Sibila, Jr. currently have top ten spots.

The tightest battle is in the J.D. Byrider Street Stock division. Only four points separate Mike Martin and Dennis Wood. Waylon Orr, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Gary Hoopingarner are top five competitors. The rest of the top ten entering Saturday’s action are Josh Moss, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Brian Lewis, Sr., Brian Lewis, Jr., and Rick Elkins, Jr.

In Finish Line Motors Mini Truck action, Mike Martin leads Keith Anderson by 36. While up for grabs, the championship will likely be Martin’s if he just competes in qualifying, heat, and feature action. Derek Cordia, Cyler Bertram, and Bruce George are in the top five.

Lastly, the Canton Auto Salvage Compact class has Dan Buckey again leading the standings. In the previous two years, Buckey has claimed the Stock Compact championships. With the elimination of that division, Buckey moved up into the Compact class and his consistency has again put him out front with one point night left. Buckey has a 51 point lead over Tim Frederick and Clayton Oliver who are tied for second. Kyle Finlayson and Larry Ennis, Jr. are in fourth and fifth. The rest of the top ten were Laney Striejewske, Justin Renicker, Wes Ennis, Chase Beatty, and Gage Jaberg.

Pit gates open Saturday, September 6 at 2:30 with grandstands and hotlaps at 3:00. Qualifying will begin at 5:00 and racing will take the green at 6:30.

Grandstand admission is regular at $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, and $8 for kids 6-15. Children five and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
