Ohio's Fun Place to Race!!

 “Chargin” Charlie Schultz lived up to his nickname last Saturday night as he blasted to the front, out muscling the competition and grabbing his third checkered flag in a row. This time the scene was Midvale (OH) Speedway and a blistering 30 lap BioBased USA Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) presented by Adkins Glass feature that saw a lot of take and very little give. Midvale is celebrating 60 years of racing with the logo “Thunder in the Valley”, and the thunder rolled last Saturday night when the ground pounding, fire breathing Monsters of the midway known as Supermodifieds hit the pavement.
Veteran racers Denny Fisher would bring the field to the start with Jon Henes alongside as they blistered into turn one. Fisher would exit with the lead and set the early pace cruising out front for the first ten markers as the field behind pushed and gouged fighting for every position to try and get a run at the leader. The first yellow flag would fly when Henes was sent spinning on the front stretch after contact in a three wide battle for position coming off turn four. The restart would see Fisher leading with A J Lesiecki in second. Lesiecki had started right behind Fisher and was doing a great job holding his own while under fire every lap. This restart was no different as the young gun stayed right in the veteran’s tracks and set sail. However, just two laps after the green was redisplayed, Lesiecki was also caught up in the cross fire and sent spinning down the front stretch but his racer would sustain heavy rear end damage and he would retire for the night. Schultz would restart second with Fisher still on point and plenty of horsepower on his tail breathing down his neck. Schultz would set just two laps after the green waved and then scooted to the outside of Fisher in a bid for the lead. That bid was a winning one as he was able to streak past and now go on point to set the pace. And set a pace he did blistering the pavement in southern Ohio night in his red racer and by the halfway point he was well on his way to his third straight MSA victory. The field would get one last shot, however, when coming off turn four looking for the checkered flag, Schultz would see yellow. A car had broken on the checkered flag lap and clogged up the front stretch. Schultz would now have to fend off both Trent Stephens now in second and a hard charging Dave Shullick Jr. in third if he was going to get that third win. With the three stacked up nose to tail the green and white flew, and so did Schultz, right down into turn one like a rocket ship off turn two and another blast down the back stretch as all the competition could do was watch the dust storm. This would be MSA career win number 21 for Schultz as Stephens stayed second with Shullick Jr. third followed by Kyle Edwards in fourth. Mike McVetta would travel home fifth from the tail of the field after completely rebuilding the front end geometry of his car all night long, with a lot of help from various sources, after a qualifying meet and great with the Midvale concrete turn four wall.
“We just had a little bit of patience,” stated Schultz. “We just had a really good piece. We worked out some stuff in the heat race and made some small changes right before the feature. Part of it is I have a lot of laps here both with this and the Main Event cars. I just had a great car, it turned good all night, I had good forward bite all night. I just can’t thank Midvale for having us here, this is a excellent facility the fans are great, just MSA, Adkins Glass, and Bio Based just thank everybody that helps on Dave and Lori’s car. At the beginning of the year we got ourselves in a pretty big hole as we were trying a lot of different stuff. It did not pan out and put us pretty far behind the eight ball. I have never been a points racer, I just like to go out and win because at the end of the night it is about who goes home with the hardware. I am just going to run these next three races like I ran the last three and if I get it (MSA Championship) ok, and if not, there is always next year. We have just progressively have gotten back to square one through the year. You get frustrated when you get behind like that and I don’t like to run like that. But, the team just kept chipping away at it, and here we are, three wins in a row,” finished the very happy race winner.
“Charlie was really fast in the feature tonight,” stated Stephens. “He made his car better all night. I just could not get into the turn like I wanted to and it hurt my exit too. All in all a really fast car, I can’t complain too much, but it sucks to be runner up. I think as the summer goes on the tracks change and we got to change our set up with it. I think at the beginning of the year our set up was really good and we have to tweak it a little to get better here at the end of the season,” finished Stephens.
“It was tough starting back there,” said Shullick Jr. “This is a tough place to pass, especially when the top three cars are about the same speed. That last restart was a green and white at the same time so you only got one true lap and short of a bonze things were going to stay the same. Kind of disappointed, but we will live and come back another day,” finished Shullick Jr.
Shullick Jr. set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 11.946 and the two ten lap heat race winners included Schultz and Danny Shirey. With three races to go for the 2014 season, the BioBased USA MSA point’s battle has definitely taken shape. We have defending, 2011, 12, and 13 MSA Champion Stephens, having won three in a row early, and now 2010 Champion Schultz with his three in a row as of late breathing right down the tailpipes of the Steve Stout led No. 19 Stephens car. Flexing his muscle at the right time with the Dave May led No. 7 mount, Schultz was the last MSA driver to get the Championship before Stephens went on this three year tear, as he looks to extend it too four. The last three events will be at the MSA home track of Sandusky (OH) Speedway, and this has the looks of a knockdown, drag out brawl for all the marbles, with plenty of egos and pride at stake.
While the Supermodifieds were the headliners, the McIntosh Oil Company Late Models stole the show. 19 cars were pitside but a number had mechanical issues. Point leader Mike Miller and defending champion Bryant Smith both loaded up early due to engine problems. Dave Martin crashed in heat action, while Bob Eichel and Tom Earley were also scratches at feature time. The 14 that did start the race, put on a heck of a show. Bob Schneider, Jr., used the outside lane on the opening start to race into the lead. Behind him, Rick Sibila, Alex Rosenberry, and Bubba Smith were taking the next three spots from Mills. Closing on the halfway point of the race, the second through fourth place cars started to put forth a challenge for the lead. Sibila moved to the outside, while Rosenberry followed Schneider on the low lane. Smith took the opportunity to move to the high lane of Rosenberry in the second row. As the race remained green, the four drivers battled in nearly perfect side by side formation well in front of the rest of the pack, putting on a great driving display. Eventually, after several laps, Sibila was able to clear Schneider. Moments later, Smith and Rosenberry relegated him back to fourth. In one of the best Late Model races in recent memory, Sibila held off Smith and Rosenberry down the stretch to claim his second win in-a-row, driving the Todd Wenger Parkway Auto/Keith Anthony Industrial Machinery #21. Following him in the caution free race were Smith, Rosenberry, Schneider, and Tom Stankiewicz. Marcus Malcuit, who didn’t get there in time to qualify due to a family outing, started at the back and finished a respectable sixth. The rest of the top ten were Doug Sommers, Randy Smart, Ron Kirkpatrick, and Larry Baker. Sibila, Kirkpatrick, and Joe Lianrd won the heats, while Stankiewicz set fast time.
The J.D. Byrider Street Stock feature was a pretty solid race as well, seeing only a couple of slowdowns for yellows. Veteran Gary Hoopingarner, who had two DNF’s and two DNS’s in his last four nights, was looking to turn his luck around. The Perry, Ohio driver started on the front row of the 20-lap grind and after winning the heat, also race out front in the feature. Dennis Wood, who is closing on the point lead and had won the previous four features, quickly made his way toward the front but made some slight contact with another competitor and caused a spin. That sent Wood to the tail for the lap three restart, giving Hoopingarner a brief sigh of relief. Waylon Orr followed Hoopingarner for the next five laps before point leader Mike Martin was able to get by after a restart. Over the next handful of laps, Martin hounded Hoopingarner to the inside but wasn’t able to get by. Eventually, Wood moved back up into the second spot and waited for an opening. The opening never came and Hoopingarner held on for his second win of the season. Following the Remax Traditions/Selway Heating & Cooling #68 were Wood, Martin, Orr, and Bob Passwaters, Sr. The rest of the top ten were Bob Passwaters, Jr., Don Boron, Sr., Tom Powell, Wayne Mounts, and Brian Lewis, Sr. Wood and Hoopingarner won the heats, while Martin set fast time.
Mike Martin, the point leader in the Finish Line Motors Mini Truck division, raced out front early in the 12-lap feature. Keith Anderson, who won his first Truck feature the previous week, held a good line in second as Cyler Bertram challenged. Bertram ran hard, trying to get by in the outside and inside lanes but to no avail. As the laps wore down, it was all Martin, taking yet another feature win and extending his point lead. The Shelbi’s Sweets and Treats/Canton Car Connection #5 was followed by Anderson, Cordia, Bertram, and Jaberg.
The Canton Auto Salvage Compact fast feature was well contested with a lot of passing. Laney Striejewske led the first lap but was overtaken by point leader Dan Buckey on lap two. One lap later, second fast qualifier, Wes Ennis raced out front. On lap five, top qualifier Kyle Rector made his way into second and started to pressure for the lead. Ennis got a little sideways in the middle of three and four, followed by some contact from Rector in the fourth corner. Eventually, Ennis spun. Yellow waved, putting Rector to the back and Ennis back out front. With nine to go, Ennis restarted with Cody Kahler trailing. Kahler, a former Compact and Sport Stock competitor came back to run for Justin Renicker who had other commitments. Kahler was solid, as was Rector who made his way back up to third. But at the checkered, it was Ennis taking his first victory of 2014. Following the New Philadelphia, Ohio driver in the Amsoil/Haas Body Shop #09 were were Kahler, Rector, Kyle Finlayson, and Tim Frederick.
Zack Cogar led the first lap in the second Compact feature before Larry Ennis, Jr. took over. Ennis, watching his time due to a slower lap than normal, fell back into second behind Gage Jaberg around the halfway mark. Ennis then put his car in the outside lane and ran alongside as the laps wore down. Most thought that Ennis would wait until the final lap and then scoot by for the win but Jaberg proved to be a little too strong and claimed his third feature win of the year. Following the Industrial Machinery/Route 39 Auto Salvage #21 were Ennis, Chase Beatty, Cristian Bailey, and Allen Clark.
Rector, Beatty, and Bailey won the heat races, while Rector set fast time.
Racing will continue this coming Saturday, August 23 at Midvale Speedway. All five divisions will be on hand in addition to spectator drags at intermission. Also coming to the track will be the Uhrichsville McDonalds Car Show entries for a few laps during the program.
Admission prices are regular at $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children five and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.
The following week, Midvale Speedway will race on Sunday, September 31 instead of Saturday for the J.D. Byrider Main Event 75 for Super Late Models. Open Modifieds will be on hand running a 40 lapper as well. Street Stocks and Compacts are also on the card. Full details will be released soon.
