Rosenberry Wins Downtown Ford 100
July 3, 2014
Rosenberry Wins Downtown Ford 100Drivers from three different states and fans from all over filled the property at Midvale Speedway this past Thursday, July 3. In what turned out to be the biggest crowd in 20 or 30 years, fans arriving late had a hard time finding an open seat and parking overflowed to the nearby Kuester Implement and Centre Supply as well as Midvale Elementary school down the road. The Great Lakes Helicopter Main Event Racing Series Super Late Models were joined by three other Midvale classes. A great fireworks display took place following the action.

The headlining event of the night was the Great Lakes Helicopter Main Event Racing Series. Qualifying was very important as the top 14 drivers locked into the 100-lap event, with all others heading to the last chance. Setting fast time with a new track record was former series champion Jimmy Carter of Brookpark, Ohio. Carter’s 13.262 won him a $200 bonus from Ricardo’s Party Center of New Philadelphia.

In the last chance race, 6 drivers transferred into the Main Event. Drew Charlson won the race, while Jeff Ganus, Jamie Hunt, Doug Sommers, Josh Way, and Nick Chmara also squeaked in. John Flynn, Ryan McManus, Scott Hantz, and Bryan Clay used point provisionals.

Marcus Malcuit and Billy Roberts brought the 24-car field to the green with Malcuit taking the early lead. Justin Schroeder quickly moved into second with Rich Rohrer and Jimmy Carter, two of the favorites taking second and third. Drivers did a great job, completing the first 15 laps without a yellow. Malcuit was building a healthy lead when Carter made slight contact with Rohrer heading into the first corner, creating a spin. Rohrer spun car collected Jake Francis as he used the nose and hood to ramp his Francis Engineering car into the air. Carter admitted fault while Rohrer and Francis continued with little success.

Back to green, Malcuit again pulled out front, with Alex Rosenberry moving into third past Rohrer whose car developed a severe push following the mishap. A couple of cautions occurred between laps 15 and 20 and it was during this juncture that Schroeder used the outside lane on a double file restart to surprisingly take the lead from Malcuit.

Caution waved after a lengthy green flag run at lap 35. When the yellow lights came on, Schroeder slowed quicker than Malcuit entering the third corner, creating contact between the two. Malcuit slammed into the rear of the Schroeder machine sending the #4 toward the wall and creating pretty severe damage to Malcuit’s front end. Malcuit went to the pits for work, while Schroeder continued at the front.

On the ensuing restart, New Philadelphia, Ohio’s Late Model teenage sensation, Alex Rosenberry used the outside lane to take the lead away. Rosenberry shot out front, while Schroeder dropped in line. It was also at this point of the race that Carter had rallied from dropping to the back to find himself again in third. By lap 40, Carter was in the second spot, which would create some wild action for the race lead.

The race saw only five more cautions in the final 60 laps and fans were treated to some of the most intense action possible between Rosenberry and Carter. Each time, the two seemed to race for the same piece of real estate and tire smoke plumed into air. Somehow, someway, both drivers kept their cars righted as fans expected a crash each time. Joining the battle late was series point leader, Scott Hantz, who had to start at the tail due to a broken rear end before qualifying. Hantz became a contender but the top two were a little too much.

As the laps wound down, Rosenberry pulled away to the elation of fans who watch him on a semi-regular basis in the weekly Late Model division at the track. At lap 100, Rosenberry claimed his first career Main Event Super Late Model win in his Flite Test/Rosenberry Towing #2. Following the Senneker Chassis across the line were Carter, Hantz, Harold Fair, Jr. who had a solid night, and Bubba Smith who made his first Midvale Main Event start. Dave Stehouwer made his first trip to Midvale worthwhile with a 6th place run, followed by Francis, John Flynn, Bryan Clay who got there after qualifying, and Ryan McManus.

The Great Lakes Helicopter Main Event Racing Series will return on Sunday, August 31 for another great event.

The Summit Racing Equipment Economy Modifieds put on a solid show for fans as well. 17 cars started the event and most of them finished on the lead lap as only one caution slowed the pace. Division rookie, Don Boron, Jr. led the way for the first seven laps before the yellow came out. The ensuing double file restart put veteran racer, Bob Sibila, Jr. on the highside and he proved to be strong when the green again waved. Sibila, looking for win #1 this season, pulled out front to set the pace. Steve Mowery, who has been fast all season, moved into the second spot and followed in Sibila’s tire tracks. Mowery really started applying some pressure in the late going, when Sibila’s setup seemed to be going away slightly. Mowery had a couple of looks here and there but never could get around the Massillon, Ohio driver. At the checkered, the Bullet Fabrication/Tom Ertle Racing #82 was followed closely by Mowery, while Boron, Tad Grove, and Glen Jewell rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Kevin McClintock, Lee McCreery, Mike Bowers, Mike Green, and Adam Stewart. Mowery, Bowers, and Shawn Marder won the heats, while Preston Walker set fast time.

Waylon Orr and Jeff Bowling were the front row starters in the 20-lap J.D. Byrider Street Stock division feature. The race saw 15 starters and it turned out to be a good one. Orr controlled the pace early and actually built up a sizable lead on a couple of different occasions. Orr was in great shape until a caution waved at lap 17, eliminating his comfortable lead. That moved top qualifier, Dennis Wood, to the inside of row two for the restart, right behind Orr. When the green dropped, Orr again moved out front but Wood followed closely behind. Moments later, Wood moved alongside Orr and pulled out front for the win after a three lap battle. It was the first win of the season for the Automotive Electric/Right Priced Motors #41. Following the Barberton, Ohio driver were Orr, Mike Martin, Bob Passwaters, Sr., and Austin Harvey. The rest of the top ten were Teddy Oliver, Bob Passwaters, Jr., Josh Moss, Tim Lynn, and Bowling. Wood and Robbie Patterson won the heats.

The final race of the night was the Finish Line Motors Mini Truck event. John Large joined the field for the first time this season and led the first lap of the feature. Division regular, Keith Anderson took over on the second pace, while point leader Mike Martin had a huge hole to recover from due to a spin. However, Martin again spun on lap five, bringing out the yellow and bringing himself closer to the field. Over the final seven laps, Martin looked high and low, trying to find his way around Anderson. Finally for Martin, he got on the lowside coming off of two with two to go. Martin took the lead and win while Anderson had a strong second place finish. The Finish Line Design/Papa P’s Auto #5 was followed by Anderson, Bruce George, Large, and Derek Cordia. Top qualifier Cyler Bertram, who set a track record in qualifying and won the heat, fell out of the event early with a flat tire.

Up next with be Christmas In July night this Saturday, July 12. Bike drawings will take place for kids, while gift certificates, prizes, and more will be given to adults. The track is taking donations from businesses, teams, and fans for the giveaways. All five divisions will be in action.
