Rosenberry & Grove Among Repeat Winners
June 21, 2014
Rosenberry & Grove Among Repeat WinnersThis past Saturday, June 21, fans saw arguable the most exciting night of racing this season. Despite ugly conditions all day long, a decent crowd showed up and most stayed all the way until the final checkered fell. From the Late Models to the Compacts and even in the Spectator Drags, excitement was on the menu.

A small field of McIntosh Oil Company Late Models was on hand with many competitors on the mend either from crashes or mechanical problems. That said, it was the most exciting race of the season. Doug Sommers, making his first start in a new ride that he put together in the offseason, and last week’s winner Bob Schneider, Jr. brought the field to green. Sommers, the longtime Barberton Speedway and Main Event regular, raced into the top spot, with Schneider dropping into third. Tom Stankiewicz, who has had some nice runs lately, pulled into the second spot to set up his chance on a lap ten yellow. With the caution coming out, the restart slated Stankiewicz to the highside of Sommers. From lap ten to 25, Stankiewicz hounded Sommers on the highside, keeping the division’s fast cars, driven by Alex Rosenberry and Bryant Smith, at bay. Rosenberry was able to get by Stankiewicz on lap 23 and maneuvered his way around Sommers for the lead two laps later. Shortly thereafter, Sommers locked up the tires a bit going into turn three and Stankiewicz went to the inside. The two made contact with Sommers retiring due to suspension damage. Over the final five laps, Rosenberry led with Smith working his way into second. While it looked for a moment like Rosenberry had it covered, Smith made up a lot of ground with two laps to go. Coming off of the second turn, he drove to the bottom and pulled alongside Rosenberry, who threw on the block. The two made contact heading into the third turn, both made great saves, and Rosenberry brought home his second win of the year. Following the Flite Test/Rosenberry Towing #2 at the checkered were Smith, Stankiewicz, Mike Miller, and Matthew Mills. The rest of the top ten were Ron Kirkpatrick, Larry Baker, Schneider, Sommers, and Don Harvey, Jr. Smith had his run eventually disallowed due to excessive speed on the frontstretch and in the tech area, following the event. Stankiewicz and Sommers took heat wins, while Miller was credited with fast time.

The Summit Racing Economy Modified field continues to be extremely strong. On this night, 19 were pitside with 18 taking the green for the 25-lap event. Last week’s winner, Tad Grove and veteran Mike Bowers led their fellow competitors in for the start of the event with Grove pulling out front. With the first eleven laps of the race going caution free, Grove was able to keep Bowers, Don Boron, Jr., and Bubba Smith all in tow, but never really separate himself from them. There were a handful of cautions for minor mishaps, which gave competitors a chance at wrestling the lead away from Grove. However, each time was like a replay of the first with Grove pulling out front and Bowers dropping in line behind him. The final restart with five to go was one that cost Bowers a runner up finish as Boron, the leading rookie, was able to race by on the inside. At the checkered, it was New Philadelphia, Ohio driver Tad Grove claiming his second win in a row behind the wheel of the Grove Home Medical/Affordable Towing #3. Boron had his best career Modified finish in second, while Bowers, Lucas Ripley, and Smith claimed top fives. The rest of the top ten were Kevin McClintock, Todd Ripley, John Ambrose, Jr., Bob Sibila, and Jason Grewell. Tyler Noeske, Todd Ripley, and Braden Swaney won the heats. Ambrose set fast time in the Mowery machine.

Bob Passwaters, Sr. led the first lap of 20 in the J.D. Byrider Street Stock feature. Waylon Orr, his fellow front row starter, took over on the second lap as Passwaters faded. Gary Hoopingarner moved into second on lap three and by the end of lap five found himself out front. One could see that Hoopingarner’s only challenger would likely be division standout Rick Elkins, Jr. Elkins, who week after week is the quickest car, though the gap has closed somewhat, moved into second on lap six. Just one lap later, Elkins challenged Hoopingarner and won the battle, moving to the front. A caution with about five laps to go was the only scare for Elkins, as his car pushed up into Hoopingarner a little going into turns one and two. Elkins was able to keep it righted and raced to his third victory of the season. The Selway Heating & Cooling/Canton Floors #62 was followed by Hoopingarner, Dennis Wood, Mike Martin, and Orr. Orr won the heat.

The Canton Auto Salvage Compact fast feature was another thriller and it set up yet another photo finish. Second year driver Laney Striejewske led the first lap of the event with cars going three and nearly four wide behind her. Donnie Leggett, III moved forward to lead the second through fifth laps. Early on, Kyle Finlayson made the decision to use the third lane while everyone was bunched up double file. When the time was right, he dropped down into the second groove and eventually got the opening he needed to race by Leggett for the lead. Finlayson built a little cushion before a lap ten yellow created a double file restart. When the green again waved, many thought that Kyle Rector, who won the 40-lapper a few weeks ago, would be able to take over. Finlayson was just strong enough to hold him off though. On lap 13, Justin Renicker, the top qualifier, moved into second and set his sights on Finlayson. Renicker darted to the outside on the last lap and looked as if he’d have him coming to the line. As the duo crossed wheel-to-wheel, many wondered who the winner was. After looking at the Mid-Vid Video photo finish, it was determined that Finlayson just beat Renicker in the J&G Striping Race To The Stripe. Following the Finlayson Towing/Kiefer Auto #15 in the top five were Renicker, Rector, Kyle Grove, and Tim Frederick. Wes Ennis, Dan Buckey, Striejewske, Mike Swaney, and Leggett.

Gerald Hahn led the first lap with Alan Walker taking over on lap two of the 15 lap B feature for the Compacts. On the move was Alan’s son, Cameron, who was sporting a newly purchased car for the first time. The younger Walker moved into second on lap twelve, but his dad had already built an insurmountable lead by then. When the checkered fell, Alan Walker had driven to his first career feature win with Cameron Walker taking second. Also following the Keeping You In Stitches #88 were Alan Clark, Zack Cogar, and Ryan Shreffler. Cristian Bailey, Gerald Hahn, Brandon France, Leeza Moore, and Chad Wise were top ten finishers.

Kyle Grove, Donnie Leggett, III, and Zack Cogar won the heats in Compact competition.

In the Finish Line Motors Mini Truck division, Keith Anderson took early lead but was only able to keep division point leader, Mike Martin at bay for so long. Eventually, Martin assumed the number one position and pulled away to his fifth feature victory of the season. The Finish Line Design/Canton Car Connection #5 was followed by Anderson and Cordia at the checkered.

Spectator drags kept fans on the edge of their seats as well. The first race saw Assistant flagman Jason Nealey put the chrome horn to pit steward Gabe Pringle in the first turn. Pringle stayed in the throttle, threw debris all over the place, but hung on for the win. Later, announcer Adam Mackey nearly pulled off the huge upset, leading Jarrod Martin, the usual favorite, for about 4/5 of the lap. One race later, Martin defeated Pringle for another spectator drag finals trophy.

Coming this Saturday, June 28, drivers will be racing for double points and larger trophies on Mid-Season championship and biker night. Late Models, Economy Modifieds, Street Stocks, Compacts, and Mini Trucks will all be in action.

Motorcycle riders will get in for just $8 if they ride their bike to the track. Others will get in for regular admission prices of $12 for adults, $10 for seniors 62+, $8 for kids 6-15, and children 5 and under are free. Pit admission is $25 for members and $30 for non-members.

Pit gates will open at 2:30, hotlaps and grandstands at 3:00, qualifying at 5:00, and racing will begin at 6:30.

The following event will be the Main Event Racing Series 100 and fireworks on Thursday, July 3.
